Next time I get my horse shod, I'll have to snap you a pic. My horse is a hi/low. We tried to take him barefoot last year. We've gone over a year on the hinds, but the fronts never quite got to a complete comfort level, never developed the sole thickness needed and we put front shoes back on after the 6 month mark. What drove me nuts right off the bat, and made me understand the problem of underrun heels with farriers, is that you can't correct anything for 6 full weeks. You just have to stand there helplessly and watch the hoof grow more forward each week. Unlike barefoot, you just can't take out a rasp and drag the heels back to keep on top of it. All you can do with shoes, is start out with the best trim possible, and hope things don't get too far out of whack in between shoeings.

Anyway back to the pic thing. If you look at my horse's low foot from the side view at the 6 week mark, you would swear he had an underrun heel. Take off the shoe, look at the solar view and you would see the heels terminating exactly where they should be in line with the back edge of the frog. My current farrier is doing a fantastic job, but anyone without all the info would immediately conclude his heel is underrun. There are lots of self professed experts out there when it comes to hooves. Doesn't mean they know what they're talking about.

I am proof positive that a good farrier is very hard to find. I went through 7 before my nightmare was over. Ironically it was my barefoot trimmer who recommended him. She said he was a good trimmer first who happened to do shoes and that turned out to be correct. Don't get too frustrated looking for the good ones. They are out there. Just make sure you understand what you are looking for. Ask lots of questions and do what you feel is right for you horse.

Be a major pain but is it an option to trailer your horses to a farrier?
