I'm going to try really hard to stop. I've done it since before I can remember, and the last time I chewed my nails was 11:50 last night... The first 24 hours is proving tough!

2010 is a new year to change my life for the better, this includes better eating habits, and not killing the enamel on my teeth XD It's amazing how much of an addiction nail biting becomes.

Good luck! I bit my nails until I was 23 years old. I tried everything including that paint on stuff that tasted bad, but nothing stopped me. I even thought once that I'd get acrylic nails and they'd look so nice I wouldn't bite them. Wrong. After spending $45 on them I bit them all off that night.

It's a very tough habit to break, but if I can do it anybody can do it. My nails are nice and long now. :)

I have the same habit as well, I gnaw mine right off at any sign of nail growing.

I hate long nails, and I cannot stand dirty long nails ugh - so off they come.

I play the fiddle anyhow, and you cannot have a long nail, especially on your fingerboard hand .

I've bit my nails off since I can remember when....long time.

I was the same way for years. As posted above by another poster; I also broke the habit when I started to wear gel nails. I can't not have nails now. I love them. Of course I haven't bitten my nails since. Great way to stop, but might get you addicted to nails.

I now have my own nails which I'm pretty proud of.

I had a manicure years ago, and you're right - it's like you get some gratification from /having/ nails that you don't want to bite. I might have to go get a mani now! XD

It's been two days. I won't even look at my nails for fear of relapse!! 8O

Guys, just keep up that willpower. I chewed my nails until I was in the 8th grade. My Dad would always get on to me "Stop eating your fingers!!" but nothing worked. I finally got tired of not being able to scratch an itch or scrub my scalp when I washed my hair. I tried the fake nails and that bitter no-bite stuff, nothing worked. It was finally sheer willpower that won out. Just keep that mind strong and it will work. I grow pretty nice nails now.

I bit my nails up until 2 months ago. It was sooo annoying and I would do it all the time. I just told myself NO more and now they are actually growing. I was so sick of worrying about what other people thought when they saw my chewed nails that I was able to quit. Good luck :)

Got some people with a strong will! I know there are special products that you can put on your nail that is supposed to taste nasty. Those I have recommended it to a lot of people, I never actually tried it.

If you aren't able to grow nails, you can also get fortifying nail coat which will help keep your nails strong so you can grow them out. Always found that once you had some nail grow, it was easier to not bite anything.

Good luck everyone!

That's great! You have more willpower than I had. One more tip for you to help them grow faster is to run an emery board across them every day. It stimulates growth just as biting them does. That's why we always had something to bite. :)

Keep it up!

Just stick with it PP!! You can do it. Get you some gum or sunflower seeds, that saved me many times.
I'm getting nails put on, then I won't have to worry about it. Gum isn't always a possible option, nor is munching on sunflower seeds. I just need to buy a bulk load of pen caps!

I got braces the other days, tried to bite my nails... wow does that hurt my teeth.
Yeah, that's what made me kick the nail biting habit when I was a kid. :) When I got braces on....yeowch! Never bit them again. Getting braces are hardly something you can do as a nail-biting preventative though.
