He has never been clipped before, but we did some trotting yesterday for about 10 minutes and the poor guy was REALLY sweaty. He has a THICK hair coat and has never worn a blanket either. I planned on doing a modest bib clip just on the neck, chest and girth area.

Will I need to blanket him now? I have the blanket he came with. Its by Brookside. I can't seem to figure out the weight though. It doesn't have any information on the tag. There is some cushion but its not very thick so I'm thinking it is only light/medium. Do you think that would be enough? Does he even need a blanket?

Also.. should I be investing in a cooler? I just don't know squat about blankets. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Depends on the horse. How cold is it there?

If he is healthy and furry (which it sounds like he is!) I wouldn't bother blanketing. If he gets cold you will know. I gave my boy a bib clip one winter and he was fine, no blanket at all (I did his flanks too) and it gets pretty cold up here. In a few weeks the hair will be long enough to have a "coat" again and the rest of the body with the full hair will keep him toasty warm.

Yup, I wouldn't worry at all, not unless you clip a lot or it is very cold or he has "cold issues" sounds like those are all n/a. Would love to see pics!

I just did a mild bib clip on Fi, I didn't take it all the way down. About half her coat. She's from Missouri, so she was a woolly mammoth ;) Worked her today, she steamed a bit, but was no where near as damp as she'd been the week before when I worked her with that shaggy coat of hers.

Works wonders.

Coolers are always a nice investment, imo.

Thank you guys so much! I think I will shave him tomorrow. He is going to be SO excited. He isn't really afraid of much.. but I've never ran a pair of clippers near him. I don't see it being a problem though.
