So my gelding has a funky head, and he's been hard to fit bridles to. Since I've been riding western, it hasn't been too big of an issue. I've had better luck with horse sized bridles than the two draft bridles I've tried. His head isn't terribly long, and he takes a standard sized bit okay. But his head is extremely broad across the brow and he has a very thick throatlatch, heavy jowls. I've been buying standard horse sized bridles, removing the browband and throatlatch and it has worked well, but since I have somewhat renewed interest in trying english again, I'm really at a loss for what I need to do to try to find an english bridle to fit him. Where do I measure, is there a particular "style" of english bridle that would suit him better?

You could try a cob-sized bridle, as they don't tend to be too much smaller, but are slighter wider. If this doesn't work, you could use a horse sized bridle and get the longer pieces from a bigger bridle. This tends to work well with cheaper bridles.
Good luck, he's a nice looking horse. I've had a similar problem at one stage, but my aussie stockhorse has a long face. Give it a go.

Hey, thanks! I'll try that. Any tips on what kind of bridle I should be looking at? We wont be doing any jumping, obviously not his style Just basic arena work. Good idea also about getting the two and mix/matching pieces. Thanks a lot!

I dont know if cob sized will work for you. My mare is in a cob, because shes too big for pony, but too small for horse sized.

Take some measurements, maybe you can get the tack shop to help you?

I wouldn't go cob, they're mostly for horses with finer heads, a lot of TBs fit in those.

For flatwork I would get just a basic plain cavesson.

Stubben allows you to order different sized pieces as well. As should any custom bridle maker.
Instead of buying two cheap bridles and mixing and matching, buy one nice bridle that is the correct size.
