When bringing a horse back into work, their respiratory system, pulmonary system and musculature adapt comparatively quickly to their joint structures to the increased workload. This is why a program must be developed that contains a lot of walk, NO lunging and a lot of straight lines.
A renowned sport horse surgeon and many other vets have agreed that the best thing to do, and not just in a rehab program, is to make sure you are warming up and cooling down for at least 15 minutes each in the walk. For a rehab program - the first two weeks should include only walk.
