Okay, Bluegrass is an 11 year old broodmare that I recently rescued last August. I'm not sure if I want to breed her again this year (she is in foal for 2014 and it will be her 8th foal). Nothing physically seems to be wrong with her.

But...she is SUPPPPPER shy. When I was able to spend time with her everyday and give her treats (she doesn't want you to come close unless you have food, then she'll let you start to touch her) she was starting to be able to be touched. I was thinking about training her and making her another riding horse...what are your thoughts? I don't want to leave her be (Not breed her or train her) because she is beautiful and has a lot of spirit and it would be a shame (and I don't want to sell her, I am her 4th home and I don't like rehoming horses unless I absolutely ABSOLUTLEY have to)

We were given Sage last year, she was 11 with a 6 month old filly at her side and pregnant, this will be her 7 or 8th foal. Sage is a great mom, but all she knows is how to be a mom. She has never been halter broke let alone broke to ride. After she weans this last foal we will attempt to halter break her so we can get her teeth done, her feet and get her to the vet if needed, but I think at 12 years old she is too set in her ways to break to ride.

It depends on her, and what you want to do with her. If she is quiet and reasonably sane there is no reason you couldn't start training her and see how it goes.
If you have never trained a horse before I would recommend getting somebody with experience to help you!
