Has anyone here built their own stalls? I know it's quite common. We have our two horses out 24/7 with a large run-in shelter, but we are considering building a couple of stalls in the old barn. We have had more than one instance where stalls would have been very nice to have. And especially since winter is coming, we'd like somewhere for them to get inside when it's nasty.

We're on a limited budget. I would love to, but just don't have the money to buy stall fronts and components. So we'd be starting from scratch with lumber and hardware.

Anyone who's done this, pictures? How did you do it? How long did it take? What materials did you use?

We built ours completely from scratch. Our barn is a "converted" dairy barn, so we had to jackhammer the odd steps and channels out of the floor, and then make holes for the main corner posts of the stalls. We used 4x6's for the front corners and the doorway, bolting those to the ceiling beams and cementing the bottoms into their holes in the floor. The back 2 corners are 4x4's bolted to the barn wall. Midway between the front and back corners are 4x4's, bolted and cemented like the front. From there, we took 2x12 planks and worked our way up the walls, I think about 5 high, 5 feet, more or less, since "they" don't really mean 12 inches :roll:. From the top of the boards to the ceiling we ran woven wire in lieu of bars. Somewhere I have a picture taken right after the stalls were finished, I'll have to try to find it and post it.

It was hard work, but well worth it. The stalls would probably hold rampaging elephants, and are holding up well. Sis's QH is pulling his wire down, we may just run 2x4's as bars around his if he insists on tearing the wire apart and making scratchy edges.

Word of caution: Don't use pressure treated lumber anywhere the horse can reach. The chemicals in it are far from horse-friendly if they start to much it.

Another thing you can do (IF I can type across what I'm meaning lol) is put up 2, 2x4's on each wall across from each other, only as high as needed , spaced only wide enough you can easily slide (without slop) 2x6's or 2x12's into them forming a wall.

Very functional, quick and you can remove or add walls as needed easily and quickly. Wish I had pics of what I'm trying to say, but I don't.

A friend of mine has her barn set up this way, and in 2 minutes can turn 2 stalls into 1 big stall (and vise versa) when needed

^ I like that idea! I'll have to pitch that to my dad. He likes to have a spare stall handy in case we have a "cow emergency" and need an extra pen, but having an empty stall around takes up other storage space. That would be awesome to be able to have one "halfway built" and ready to go!
