Cosequin ASU allergic reaction?

Hello horse forum, about 4 weeks ago I switched my horse from tri-acta joint support to cosequin asu since it has faster shipping time. Looking at the ingredients, they are very similar, and cosequin has good reviews. My horse's arthritis is mild, but without a joint supplement his hocks click and he gets stiff. Both cosequin and the tri-acta seem to help him move better the same. However, i am starting to think that he might be allergic to the cosequin. The following week I took him to a horse show. He was staying at the fairgrounds all week, and halfway through he started to get hives. The vet came to see him and gave him a steroid for them since they were pretty severe. She thought since he is used to being outside 24/7 he was having a reaction to the pine shavings or we got a bad batch of them. We switched his bedding and he seemed fine. No more hives until yesterday I noticed he had some hive looking lumps. If they are not gone today, I'll have to get him more of the medicine. He has been outside 24/7 for the last 2 weeks, so I'm starting to wonder if it is possible he is allergic to the cosequin? He has no other symptoms and takes the cosequin everyday, but he was clear of hives until today.

So a week and a half after starting the consequences, hives appeared? Coincided with moving to show grounds. Steroids given (long acting shot?). Now hives have returned?

Yes, but it was a small dose of an oral steroids. I'm not sure it would have lasted the 2 weeks following the show. Today his hives have gone down significantly without medication and he only seems to have 2 noticeable ones left, so it's weird.

I have had three horses on Cosequin ASU+ without issue, but that doesn’t mean a horse couldn’t have a reaction to it.

With the brutal weather most of the U.S. is locked into, my guess it is producing something in the way of toxins that are bothering him. My horses are itchy an$ I’m itchy💩🤯💩🤯

If you’re thinking of changing meds again, Lubrisyn HA has worked very well for me with hock arthritis on one horse and stifle issues on the other.

I got stung by a wasp this AM. — their new hole is about 3 feet from one of the horses water tubs — it will be full of spray as soon as the sun sets tonight.
