I don't know how many of you have heard, but over a week ago Courtney King-Dye sustained serious head injuries and is now in a coma.
She was schooling a young horse with no behavior issues. The horse tripped and went down. Courtney was not wearing a helmet and fractured her skull.

So...at the show today, you know what was unbelieveably hypocritical?
Wearing a top hat WITH the green ribbon.
Like fine, you still want to ride with a top hat-your choice totally. But then don't say that you support the fight against traumatic brain injury.

I do hope that Courtney pulls through ok. She's an absolutely lovely rider

Sometimes I wonder about people...

Yes I wear my helmet every day I school and if I'm going to be showing a strange horse, my top hat stays in its hat box.
I do show in a hat. I would not go about adorning it with green ribbon though. Even if it is for "supporting Courtney".
Like 2, maybe 3 people up here in the arctic even knew that she was in the hospital at the AM show. No green ribbon in sight.

I feel terrible for her! She has had a horrible few years. She got disqualified at the Olympics because her horse had a fem PPMs of NSAIDs in its system. This after the horse was at a vet clinic. Of course it was exposed to NSAIDs. Then that GP horse died, then her other GP horse died. And now she is in a coma. Poor girl

I've been following this through another forum. How incredibly sad, and sobering. My thoughts continue to be with her and her family.

I found out about it a few days after it happened. It is heartbreaking. What im worried about is her losing a lot of her muscle memory. It is very sobering, as JDI said. It makes me want to go buy my new helmet even sooner (though im not really riding right now).

This just goes to show that even the even on the quietest horses, accidents do happen. I feel really sorry for the poor girl and I'm hoping she turns out ok. I hope she gets back on the ponehs and makes a comeback

Oh how heartbreaking!
The fact she has been off the vent now for 36 hours is good. Coming back from an injury such as this can be difficult but not totall unheard of.
The muscle memory thing I wouldn't worry to much about at this point.
If/when she comes back and is able to get her self on a horse (ie. horse physical therapy) I am thinking her body will remember some. Just how much or how fast will be pertinent to how much damage she may have. If she will have any at all. You just never know. The human body is amazing!

My thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.

I do feel very sorry for her, sounds like she has had the worst luck imaginable.

I agree though don't do the green ribbon thing on your top hat, talk about hypocritical. I wear my helmet even when I am lunging and schooling a horse on the ground, you just never know what might happen around a 1000 pound animal. I don't even jump on Major to warm up my legs or to just wander around the farm without a helmet, and he is the most sure footed and safest horses I have ever met.

I heard about this accident on facebook, everybody around here is devistated, i hope everything turns out ok. Some good came out of thise though, i have seen a lot more people wearing helmets, and people are realizing that even the best riders have wrecks, and even though dressage isnt over fences its still very dangorous.

Heard about this when it first happened. Been thinking about her and Jan Byyny a lot since then. Surefire Eventing : Jan Byyny : International Event Rider : Horse Jumping : Dressage : Endurance Riding . Can you imagine what would have happened to Jan if she had not been wearing all her XC gear?!

That's why we all need to learn from this and wear our helmets. Every horse, every ride. This doesn't just affect the rider, it affects everyone that knows them.

My friend texted me & told me about this a few days ago, I think it's just awful. The only good that I can find out of this situation is that it's opened people's eyes to the fact that even brilliant riders on wonderful horses can still get hurt, so a lot of people have put on helmets because of this. It's horrible that it took someone getting seriously hurt in order for that to happen, though. I really hope she's able to recover.

Oh wow! This is news to me! I had the pleasure of meeting her last year. She is a lovely person and beautiful rider. Prayers definitely go out to her and her family!
