MAre and stallion having trouble 'covering'. mare just kicks back at ALL the stallions we try, any suggestions of what may help????:?

Usually - not always, of course - it's the stallion's fault rather than the mare's.
What kind of stallions have you tried? A stallion that has pasture bred is usually far better at his "moves" than one that has always been hand bred.
If you have been using stallions that are wise in the ways of mares and have all the right moves, then I'm not sure what to tell you other than what NDAppy said. I've not encountered a mare that would not breed if the timing was right and the stallion was experienced, but I guess it can happen. You can always use AI as a last resort...

Or put the breeding hobbles on her. If she's maiden she might just be afraid too, in that case the vet can tranquilize her a little to take the edge off.

So, are you using controlled breeding? Can you describe exactly what process you are using so that we might help you identify where the triggers are coming into play? It may be something to do with your approach and/or equipment/personnel rather than the mare or stallion.

Don't think I would tranq in this case......she needs to be able to stand under the weight of the stallion........so needs to be fully alert.

Mare we had at the clinic, did all kinds of tests on her,tried hobbles, tried letting her and the stallion be across the fence from each other, tried different stallions. Did ultrasounds so they knew when she was ready to breed, did injections to time heat cycle.Everything showed normal and everything showed timing was right. Did this numerous times during breeding season. They did everything and spent lots of money on this mare, she would not let a stallion near her when she was in heat, but would be okay when not in heat. They even did AI's. Never took, she even fought during the AI's. This mare was never able to be bred for whatever reason, she would tear a stallion apart.

Many years ago, one of my aunts tried and tried to breed her mare to different stallions. Wasn't receptive to any of them. Then she tried a grade palomino stallion, she was receptive to him only. This may have been influenced by the fact that her pasture buddy was a palomino gelding, so she may have felt more comfortable to relax by another palomino. Good luck

That's why I suggested A LITTLE to take the EDGE OFF not knock her out. I'm pretty sure the vet would have a good idea of how much dosing she could take and still be functional but not hysterical.
I had a maiden mare who was acting like this for a couple of years. I came to the conclusion she was just too young and at 5 years old, she decided she was ok with the stallion and allowed him to breed. But she pushed it until I had actually called the vet and he was pulling up the driveway as the mare decided to stand and let the stallion cover her. So, turned out not to be necessary after all. Just suggestions.

If I were you, I would suggest profiling her along some sort of safe fence, where she would be safe along. Most of the time a tease stallion will get you the results you need to know, whether she is in heat or not. To me, it sounds like she isn't in heat. Though, like already said, there is a chance she could be afraid of the new situation.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but a stallion himself can also be a tease stallion. I know where I am learning at a barn we use a "tease" stallion, he knows his job.
I would try that, or maybe hobbles if you know for certain she is in heat.

I agree, I have handled live covers with a dose of Rompin(sp?) with no problems. I was told by a vet that Rompin won't completely disable a horse but it seems to help them place and keep their hind legs placed. This was about 15 years ago, I am sure there is better drugs now and he may of been feeding me a line, I don't know, but it worked.
I was working for a breeding farm that was just starting up and they had not built a set of stocks yet. The same vet would AI and preg through a gate with a dose of Rompin as well.

Is she a dominate mare? I have found that they are a little more stand offish than others. Case in point years ago we had a mare that would not breed to 2 stallions we chose for her. Only after buying one and bringing him home did sh become receptive and only after exposure to him through a fence for a couple of months.
Again after buying my arabian stallion earlier this year we had the mares pastured a half mile away. Only after bringing them closer and being able to visit him would the alpha mare approach his fence without her ears pinned back. Now she backs up to the fence whenever in heat. Shalom

Have you tried AI with her? That may help.
If not, have you done a full internal exam and had blood work done?
I do know of a case where a mare refused to be covered for several years. After a very thorough exam and some bloodwork to confirm.. turns out she was not only a she. She was also a he, just w/ no outward visible signs (there were testes and ovaries in her, but no penis). She also had very high testosterone levels for a "mare" as well as a few other things. Obviously she was not bred. I believe they ended up speutering her. (I'm using the term her, bc she lived life as a mare.. not really sure what to call one).
