I've decided to reopen a certain trail on my land and turn it into a Hobbit World for my granddaughter and future grandchildren (son and wife are expecting second child , yippee!). So what I would love are some ideas from all you creative people on what I can add .

Here's what I've got so far:

Giant mushrooms (created from chicken wire molded and shaped then covered with tarp and then covered with mortar. Made depressions within the top of the mushroom to add a plant )

Little doors to put on the tree bases and little mail boxes.

Am making a Troll Bridge

Making Giant Butterflies , Bumble Bees, Lady Bugs and Caterpillars.

Want to put together a tiny hobbit cemetery with grave stones and either a stone wall around it or black wrought iron fence.

Will be planting many native wildflowers along the trail.

So, that's it so far, and would love some more ideas.

Awww! Thanks guys! I'm just a big kid getting to enter "fantasy land" again because of grandchildren. I'll take pictures when it's all done, though taking pictures is not one of my "talents", I'll give it a go. :wink:

get one of the plastic round sleds for a mold to use as a mushroom top
use different size pvc pipe for the stems , use a post hole digger to
make a hole for the pvc pipe deep enough so it will not fall over.
and fill up with concrete. in the top of the pipe insert a 12 inch piece of
rebar 1/2 or 3/4 inch dia. in the top of the mushroom insert an appropreate
piece of pvc pipe to slide over the rebar sticking out of the mushroom stem

fill the sled up for large mushrooms, fill less to make smaller mushrooms
I would use concrete not mortar, it will weather better I think and
the price of bagged concrete isn't bad.

using your granddaughter, trace her outline in a sheet of plywood
and cut it out, use that pattern to make more hobbitts, then paint characters of Hobbitt land. to put around the tree homes and such.
LOL.


use low voltage lights to place behind windows to light up the houses,
porch lights also for little street lights, use motion detectors and electric eyes to turn the lights on and off.

a nice pathway, paint it yellow like the yellow brick road (i know
hobbitt land don't have yellow brick roads.) LOL.. I am thinking
future add on.

And congrats on the new grandbaby that is in the oven.

Okay Gene, I'm thinking you will need to come to Maine and help create this Hobbit Land! Getting the appropriate enthusiasm from you for this project and getting a bit of resistance from Don! Of course that might be because he is seeing past the "fantasy" and seeing how much work will be required from him!LOL!

what work, it would be a labor of LOVE.

go to yard sales and buy little wheelbarrows and buckets
stuff like that. And a little wishing well, they have to have
water you know. or a small hand pump. pitcher pump I think
they were called. place a tub underneath one of those half
whiskey barrels put the pump on the bottom of the barrel and
use a small pond pump to make it look like water is coming out of the
pump into a small bucket which has a hole in the bottom to drain
back into the tub hidden under the barrel, with a small person
by the pump to give the idea of they are pumping water.

and a little fake christmas tree for tis the season. put in the
little town square. little animal lawn ornaments placed around
for effect.
