So recently I took in my boyfriend's horse because the horse was not living in a sanatery enviornment. Ive notice this horse seems sore on his hindend, I believed it was a sore muscle or hip out. However recently I discovered a cut or a slit in his frog. Its not deep inside, but its long as in I can put the hoof pick inside (the pick part) and all the way to the curve in the pick. I am worried about infections. Is there anything I should do? Any tips?

Thanks in advance

Get a vet or farrier to come have a look, because that sounds deep being able to get a hoofpick in there. If its making him sore, it could already be infected. In the meantime, use iodine or an disinfecting scrub- like hibiscrub- and put some purple/blue (antibacterial) spray on it.

I would use iodine and a disinfectant topical ointment. Then i'd wrap it to stay clean. I have a hoof bandage from Tractor supply ($7.99) which i love! It comes with a self adhesive pad and a velcro closure- thisi s good to have for diffrent reasons.

You could also do it the cheap way.. which is to buy a large flip flop, cut off the top in the shape of the hoof and duct tape it to the hoof to avoid it getting dirty until it heals. Change regularly though.

^^^ ditto, to keeping it clean! You could try a poultice too. Get the poultice secure with duct tape- way cheeper than vet wrap!

When my qh had a deep cut to the frog couple winters back I called my farrier very next morning (I found it out night before). He came out, cut off what was already cut, cleaned, put medication, and wrapped.

I kept cleaning it with the iodane solution, putting koppertox once/day (sometime at night, sometime in morning), and then wrapping the hoof with bandage and duct tape/Gorilla tape for another week - week and half till she grew some of it back. Not fun, of course, but I rather keep it clean.
