So, I got a job at a great facility that works with youth groups, girl scouts, small school groups, and special needs kids on horseback. They teach them everything about horses and let them ride around and depending on their level of experience (there's a scale system) go out and enjoy the trails and beautiful scenery.

Today was my first day. I met all 10 horses (Spring, Bobbi, Copper, Riley, Cowboy, Ranger, Scout, E.T., Wolf, Maverick) that are used for the program, tacked them up, and taught Girl Scouts getting their first Horse Fan badge how to stop, go, turn left and right, and then we did a fun "egg and spoon" race type thing (without the race part. haha).

SO FUN. this was just my first day and I'm so excited to be working there all summer. There are great horses, great kids, and I have a great boss!

Cookies to all who read :D:D:D

That's exciting!! I just had an interview for a similar type of barn (they do therapy for people with disabilities), so my fingers are crossed!

Horse camps are so much fun! I'm going to be the head wrangler (with any luck, I've been a wrangler two summers in a row and substitute head wrangled twice last summer, my interview is one Tuesday) at a camp near me this summer and I'm so excited!
It's a great feeling to be helping people and teaching them to love horses, while spending time with the best animals ever. Heehee

Congratulations on a great first day!

Most awesome thing that happened yesterday:

This tiny little fourth grader was soooo afraid to get on Bobbi (a 30 year old STB) who is the slowest horse ON EARTH. She was afraid to hold the reins, make him go, make him do anything. And she asked "Can you stay with me? Please?!" So I did for a while. Then she got more and more confident and didn't need me to stay with her anymore. By the end of the lesson with me and my boss, she was sitting proud, and steering him all by herself and Bobbi was listening to her wonderfully.

She got off Bobbi, handed the reins to me and hugged me when she said "Miss Drew, thank you so much for letting me ride Bobbi. I love him!"

SOOOOOOO CUTE!

oh wow, reading about that little girl on Bobbi gave me goosebumps!!
What a fantastic job to have. So lucky to be able to do something like that.

Riding and being around horses is so great for kids, especially for those with special needs. I watched a documentary the other day about a severly autistic boy who was taken horse riding and oh my gosh, the difference it made to him was just amazing. A real tear jerker.

When I was about 14, I used to help with my local riding for the disabled group and it was just great working with them. I taught them stable management - how to brush the horses, pick out their feet and so on. It was brilliant.

You must be so excited about your summer. Please keep us updated with your experiences!

PS love your profile pic!
