Okay, I'm looking at this Quarter Horse cross and he has these big Draft/Mustang hooves. He's only about 14.3-15hh, but I'm pretty sure he might be a Draft x Quarter Horse. He seems to have some speed, but I'm just worried that it might be a bit more difficult for him to do speed events with those big hooves. Also, would it feel uncomfortable while he's running, like would it be bit harder to sit than a normal horse's gallop? Thanks. I also want to hear about your Draft crosses! What do you do with him/her?

My 16.3hh paint/Percheron cross gelding has what we jokingly call "salad plate" hooves. They're not quite as big as a full draft's dinner plate hooves, but they're quite a bit bigger than a regular light horse's hooves.

His trot is super smooth and his canter is like a rocking horse. He doesn't really gallop, but I'd think it would be just as smooth. It'd just be a bit ponderous.

As for what we do...well, right now he's just green broke, so we don't do much. I want to do a little bit of everything with him, though. Dressage, WP, western dressage, eventing, even some fun barrels and/or poles.

He's a cutie!

I have a lot of people in my life that have draft mixes doing speed events, even stadium jumping over 3 feet (with proper training) and pole bending!

Have lots of fun with him if you end up with him!

Thanks for your responses! I'm going to check him out again with my trainer, hoping for the best. :)

I'll warn you now. Once you go draft, you never go back. I never thought I'd own a draft cross (especially not here in the land of the QH, paint and Arab), but I wouldn't trade my boy for the world. When my fiancé and I get better established and get him a horse, it's probably going to be another draft cross.
