Hey all! I have not been on for a while as I have been so busy with work and trying to get Drifter into shape. I will have to post some updated pictures of him soon as he is looking FABULOUS compared to what he was.

I'm guessing that because he is out 24/7 in pasture, the sun is starting to take its toll on his mane and tail. He has red streaks appearing in his mane, and the new hair growth coming in on his tail is a reddish orange. Almost closer to orange. I have a picture I snapped with my phone the other day of his mane. It's not the best quality, but you can see the red I am talking about. I will try to get a picture of his tail later this evening. It is A LOT more apparent than his mane. My question is...what is something I can do/use to help get the black color back? Someone mentioned hair dye for people from CVS or walgreens but I cant help but see this going badly if I tried, haha. So was just looking for some other suggestions!

Thanks :)

Not much you can do at this point.

Shave it off so itll grow back dark. (Which i dont recommend...lol)

Or...

Dye it with a permanent hair dye. (Very carefully)

Next year, if you can, keep him inside during the day so he doesnt get bleached out.

I hate putting him inside in a stall because he throws fits when no one else is around. As long as someone is in view of his stall he's ok, but as soon as the barn is empty you can hear him kicking and thrashing and just throwing a major fit. It's an issue I am going to have to eventually tackle, I know. But I have been focusing on some of his other problems for the time being.

I'll try the hair dye! Thanks for the advice :) I love his mane natural, I don't think I can shave it. I would probably just rather deal with the red haha

I think You can also try the fly sheets with the neck cover as well, at least I THINK some of them have UV protection and can come with a cover thing right above the tail and then you could bag his tail. Hahah wow I think that would work but poor boy would probably hate you for 'dressing him up' lol.

If you go to the African American section of the hair products at the supermarket, they often have sprays and oils that have SPF built in that helps protect from fading. :)

barrel racing arab and Oh vair oh have good points. I would not dye his mane. This will dry out and cause breakage. you may try just regular spf lotion.

My mustang has this, I think it's cute :) However you can always use black hair dye, hair/heat protection with SPF and a lot of moisturizing. If my mare ever had this happen to her, she'd get a serious make over lol!

If you have to keep your horse inside a stall all day just for a look, I think we have a problem. I would try the other things mentioned before that. Personally I really like the look your horse has going on. Hight lights!
