I'm not quite sure weather to be mad yet but I think my farrier is going to stop working for us. I don't know why he would do that but exactly a week ago he was out and he shod my pony but wasn't feeling good so he left without doing Dozer. I called asking when he was going to come out and he never returned my call. Normally, he calls my mom or someone but there has been no contact since the day he was out. I know when he decides he doesn't want to help someone anymore he doesn't call back so now I am all worried :/. I think it might be because I watched when he was doing Bart's(pony) feet. He told my aunt, not me, that he likes people who just leave the check somewhere and lets him get it done. Well sorry I was interested! Geez, it was one time that I watched and it was just because I wanted to see how his feet were healing from his abscess...
Do you think I should start worrying that he dropped me or wait it out a few more days?

I think I would politely call him (or have your parents) and ask, and explain you need to know so you can be sure to schedule a new farrier, rather than let your horse go without attention. Don't be rude, just ask directly. Could be he's just not organized, or if he was really ill, he may be unable to communicate with anyone right now, so I wouldn't be too upset just yet. If you don't get any calls back in a couple of days..follow up and find a new farrier to fill in this time, and perhaps permanantly if you never hear back you have a new professional, and if you do and he was just sick, he should understand a one time fill in by another professional.

I was thinking maybe he still wasn't feeling well but his wife is the main communicator so unless something happened to both of them, I think they should have called by now.

Ugh, We love his prices($45 for a big draft for all 4 feet) so hopefully its just them lagging behind. Another sucky thing is that we already paid him for both horses and he only did one...

Oh, if you already paid, and you think the wife should be reachable, I'd be leaving a message about when he's coming to finish the job you paid for...but don't harrass him. Annoying people is different from just checking in. You never know, could be they were in an accident or something, so calling once every other day shouldn't be harrassing, if they are okay, then it should motivate them to come back out or give a refund. Hard to say, though.

I fell out of communication for a couple of days when my cell broke, but I tried to email everyone or call from home if I excpected to be in touch with them. So, at this point, I'm inclined to give the benefit of the doubt. If you dont' hear back in a week, and there's nothing in the newspaper..then I'd start calling and asking about the money at least.

Well my parents are going to call today so they should come out soon. I think they dont like me but whatever.

Ya I was thinking maybe something happened but they don't live in the same town as us so I don't even know if they would be in our newspaper if something did happen. I will definitively give the benefit of the doubt. No worries there.

I think him not wanting you around is a red flag. I think I am a reasonable horse owner and I have gone through a few farriers because I find them to be very irresponsible in general (of course this isn't everyone and I'm sure there are good ones out there) But if a farrier told me he didn't want me around while trimming my horses feet he would be packing up and leaving without trimming any of my horses.
And the fact that he just doesn't call back when he drops someone is very unprofessional. I would say get a new farrier. If he wants to keep you as a client either his wife or him should have called you. I think it's reasonable to say if he couldn't call you his wife could.

If my farrier was anywhere near that unprofessional, I wouldn't give them a chance to quit on me--I'd send them down the road personally. ESPECIALLY if they didn't want me to watch while they were trimming and shoeing my horses. If they don't want you there, they're doing something to your horse they wouldn't want you to see. My advice is find a new farrier and give that jacka** his walking papers.

My farrier doesn't mind my being there to hold my horse but I leave him alone to do his work. What they charge for what they do and have to put up with is not a lot of money. They need to do a good number of horses in a day to make money and taking the time to talk/socialize with each owner and answer one question after another slows him down.

As for your farrier not finishing the job and not calling back ... I would get another farrier when my guys were ready. If and when he finally did call back, I'd ask for an explanation before allowing him to work on my horses again.

Here, this is very typical of farriers. They are flakes, they don't return calls in a timely manner, and that's just how they work. At least in our market it is. The check cashing is a whole other issue. He should not be receiving money for services that have not been rendered. I had a farrier do that to me twice and fired him.

Well he came today. Unannounced. I wasn't home to find out why but I think we are going to give him the benefit of the doubt and keep him around. BUT... if this happens one more time he is going to be fired.

My farrier does not do that. He is actually letting me help with my horses. He has even offered to let me go under him and learn the trimming process and the shoeing. I ask questions every time that he is out so it should not be a problem for your farrier to let you be there. My farrier likes the fact that I want to be there because it helps him out because my horses stay calmer when I am around for the process.

My old farrier didnt call me for days, weeks. My mare lost both her shoes the day after she came out. very odd. It happened a few times. So I found a new guy I liked and told her not to come back. I am pretty sure she knew why, all she needed to do was listend to my messages again. It is unacceptable to not call clients who have a serious situation, (lame, pulled shoes) within a week or so. Especially when they have your house, cell and email. Even if something does come up with the farrier I will get someone else out, because my horse is in pain. If they are away they should let everyone know or have a back up farrier clients can call for emergencies.

My new farrier calls/ texts me back in minutes. Even if he dosent do the best job, he called me back, talks to me about issues we have, reads up on my mares hoof problems and he puts shoes back on for free if they come off, when he was out that week. Im going to keep this one simply because he calls me back. Its just good business.

I wouldn't let a farrier that didn't let me watch his work anywere near my horses, but he should at least finish the job he was paid for or give a refund... After that, I'd replace him ASAP...

I gave my former farrier 2 weeks to return a phone call, then I moved on and found a better one... More expensive, but returns calls promptly and is very good with my girls...
