So, this is my favorite picture so far of Bones. Not because it’s the best picture of him, but because it was from such a crazy day.
It started as one of those days that I didn’t think was going to be super difficult. Bones was cranky with me to start out as can be kind of a grudge holder, and he was mad he got in trouble the prior day. So when we started off by having to lope a long distance up the side of a canyon to get around some cattle I didn’t have much empathy for him.
The day ended up being so much harder than I anticipated though. My mom and I took that group of cattle down a different canyon than the others took, and they were fighting us every step of the way. A ways down the canyon she lost a couple of cows over the top of her side, and she went over the skyline after them.
Bones was very young, and we still had creek crossing issues, so it was hard enough getting him over the creek to continue the rest of the cattle on that side, but every time I’d cross to fix that group the other side would try their side of the mountain. I was getting super nervous because my mother hadn’t come back, and she doesn’t really care to ride alone.
After an hour or so my dad came trotting into sight. I waved my arms to get him to come over and when he got to me I told him my worries as he helped me move that stubborn group of cows. When we got to the bottom my husband and daughters were there with the main group. I was really worried at this point when I saw my mother wasn’t there, so without saying anything Dad took off one way and I took off the other.
Bones is super ambitious, and at that point I was also beginning to feel a lot more empathy for him. He wasn’t tired, but he should have been, however with Mom out there somewhere I still pushed him up this mountain to see if I was high enough to spot her.
When I looked around I had a good view of a couple valleys, but I didn’t see her anywhere, and my oldest girl came trotting up to where I was. I hadn’t realized she was following me when I left and her poor fat gelding wasn’t going to stand up to the hard riding I intended to do. I could see my husband and little daughter had taken a different canyon and were just skylining, so I realized at that point I was going to have to take it easier and my daughter let her horse step on his bit right then. He threw back and tore that bridle apart. I looked at it and it was not something I could manage any way to Mickey Mouse together. I waved my arms to get my husband’s attention as I saw he stopped on the top of his canyon to glass.
He and my little girl started their way over and I realized my only option was to give my oldest girl my bridle because she couldn’t get down the mountain without one. I took the cotton reins from her bridle and tied a makeshift war bridle on my colt.
In a much slower fashion we began to hunt for my missing mother. Eventually we saw that she and my father were together headed down the range back to where the pickup was. My husband took this photo of Bones and me then. I was so proud of him for putting the kind of day that he did in and managing so well.
