So excuse me as I'm kinda illeterate (sp?) on what feeds to give and so on..

So I got Moose October 22nd from a guy who had him from two weeks and previously bought him from auction. It was apparent he wasnt fed well, as you could see his ribs slightly.

Where I board now he gets 3/4ths a scoop of pellet (on the bag it just says high fiber which im assuming is the same) in the am and pm, as well as a free choice round bale and grass.

Now I just might possibly be moving him to a different barn down the road. he would get fed in the am in his stall (with whatever grain i provide) and hay as well as get fed in the pm (by me) with hay and grain.

In the summers he wont get hay as he will be on 50+ acres of grass..now does this sound resonable?

Also, what kind of pellet should I feed? How many flakes at night? He is still going to be on pasture 24/7 year round unless the weather is horrible.

My horses are easy keepers and they are on pasture 24/7. I feed them Life Data Labs Barn Bag. I give them a half cup (this is according to their weight) and whole oats. How much oats just depends on their conditioning and energy needs. Right now I can't ride my gelding so he gets the Barn bag ration only, plus a flake of hay in the morning and at night since the grass growing has come to a halt! My farrier recommended it to me and I've very happy with the results.

My horses are out 24/7 and get brought in to their stalls to eat. My 4 year old geilding gets a full scoop of Purina Strategy Am and Pm. I keep hay in their stall so they can munch while they are waiting to be let out again (during winter they have round bales in the fields.) My yearling gets a half scoop am/pm.

If for some reason he was going to be inside for the night I'd put 2 flakes of hay in his hay rack for him, or more depending on the size of the flakes.

In the summer/spring, when there is a lot of grass, we don't throw hay out. You can always try, but in my experiance most horses will eat the grass instead of the hay.

Feeding requirements differ for each horse, so it depends on how easily your guy keep his weight up. You can always read the bag and go by what they recommend. If your horse starts looking chunky you can cut back, or if he looks a little lean add more. If he's doing good on 3/4's a scoop now, it will probably work at your new place. Just watch him in the spring, summer to see if he's getting too fat off grass and go from there.

Okay and what feed would you recommend? I would want to feed a different brand of pellet then what he is getting now. Should I gradually introduce the new pellet and mix with the old and slowly ad more new pellet to his feed and less old?

Why do you want to change?

Horses should be fed according to need not because we feel the need to follow what someone else is doing.

What does he do? Compete? If so, how often. Trail ride? If so, how far/often? Pasture puff?

We do mostly trail rides or I'll hop on 1\2 x a week. Eventually I wanna start barrel racing him

Well I'll tell you how I figured it out with my horse (who as you know has been on the gaining streak for awhile.)

I took my horse's weight into consideration and compared it with the weight he was supposed to be at. I started giving him two flakes of hay but then increased it to three since he was a bigger horse he needed more hay to keep weight. To gain weight, and nutrients, I started to feed him 1 scoop of sweet feed as it had a good fat content and a little of everything. I then told the barn manager that I wanted him with a higher fat feed, so we added half a scoop of Triple Crown Senior (the barn manager recommended it.) After 2 weeks, we saw improvement but it was very small and since I was working him more, he still wasn't in the clear. So I talked with the barn manager again, and we doubled his rations (over time, mind you!) and that helped. But then recently I decided not to have him on sweet feed but keep him on senior as it doesn't have all the molasses and the senior feed had more vitamin a and minerals, so we took him off of the sweet feed and increased his senior feed again. So now he's at 2 scoops of senior, and 3 flakes of hay at every meal. He's gained over 100 pounds in 2 months, and has been able to muscle up without getting ribby.

It's about starting at a baseline that makes most sense. If you are working him lightly, and you are happy with his weight and he isn't a tank, start with 2 flakes of hay and maybe 1/4 scoop of grain. Then when he starts working, you can start increasing the grain ration until you are happy with where it is at. Probably no more than 1 and a half scoops when you're riding him more and he's burning calories and fat. But it's up to you! Make sure you have a conversation with the barn manager so you're on the same page.

He's keeping his weight on fine right now with the 3/4ths scoop and the round bale. He has a huge hay belly though. The grass is starting to die now due to the colder weather. So unless I move him he will have the round bale.

The lady who feeds at the other barn i might be moving to said something about they have a round bail for back up? Didnt really understand why but Im going to have to talk to her more anyway. But she feeds hay in the AM and id feed it in the PM too.
