Agreed 200% :geek: Its our responsibility to keep them as safe as possible, to feed and take care of them, we should in our power make sure no harm comes to them if possible, safe pastures, safe stalls, safe trailers. Accidents happens unfortunately thats out of our control at times, but we need to try to prevent the accidents from happening. Dont set them up for failure..Most accidents are man made so think twice before you put a horse in a situation that could be harmful.
Thanks for the read its so true..

Hmmmm, I'd like to meet a "no voice" horse......mine have plenty of opinions and are not the least bit afraid to express them. They tell me how it's going to be as often as not. It can't be a partnership if it doesn't have 2 sides.

There are plenty that really don't have a say or a kind hand. Think about how fortunate your horses really are

Actually @dustyk, I think I'm the lucky one. I was being sarcastic. It's a well known fact around here that my horses have hot and cold running barn help (me) and that's because they are anything but jerks and stubborn or stupid. I have been blessed with some of the sweetest animals ever and am grateful for that fact every single day. Doesn't mean we don't disagree every now and then or that we don't have to have the odd CTJ meetings but for the most part, we get along amazingly well. My husband makes jokes that my horses wear Gucci and I wear Goodwill so that they can. LOL! Not quite that bad, but if it came down to it, yep.

@Dreamcatcher Arabians Same here. There are opinions. Wall to wall opinions…

You would think my mare hates having her mane brushed. She twists her head out of your reach. But no. She loves having her mane brushed but for maximum enjoyment her throat latch must be scratched at the same time - with one specific brush. And I do it. With that specific brush. Just an example of one of many, many opinions…

But yes - there are many horses which are regimented and required to be robotic. Sad.

I read it and thought, "Sounds like the military" - where I spent 25 years!

As for horses...How the horse is trained may not be as important as who the horse ends up with. There are sympathetic riders and riders who see a horse as a tool. There are very experienced riders who treat the horse as a tool. Or not. And sometimes, the horse largely IS a tool - just like the military. Because a horse with a job HAS a job to do, and neither man nor beast has to be happy about it:
My horse is somewhat pampered, but he also knows when we're on a trail that A) He has a right to an opinion and to express it, and B) He may need to buckle down and just get something DONE. How one teaches that is a matter of leadership, and no leader ever has just one way to getting a job done.

Bandit is Half-Arabian, Half-Mustang and All Opinion. But he also knows when to sigh and pull a Nike: "Just Do It!"

Sounds like me. Recently I saw a really nice pair of jeans that I really liked. Thought about it for a minute and thought "Naw, not going to spend 70 bucks on a pair of jeans and then turned right around and spent 200. on the horses because they needed it.

This mad me giggle. Sounds like my diva mare, Patti, and her coming at me at 100 mph to have her butt scritched. I can't tell you how many people she's scared to death with that little routine because they've all been taught that a horse with its butt to you is going to kick you into the next county. Nope, Patti wants her butt scritched and will do whatever it takes to get it. I get my nails done just so they feel just right. She also likes to be scratched with the rake. Nope, not spoiled at all. None of them.

I'm not sure if I'm sorrier for the horses who don't get to express themselves to humans or for the humans who don't get to be the recipients of the horses expressions. They have no idea what they're missing out on.

Exactly! The job may on occassion just plain suck, but once it's over and we can all get inside, dry out, enjoy a good groom and blanket and sit and enjoy listening to the horses munch their hay, it's all worth it. The armed forces have a lot to be said for them and good leaders know how to get the best out of themselves and their troops.

I'm going to read this to Milton...just to remind him of how good he has it. But he will probably ignore me and insist that I either scratch his itchy spots, refill his hay bag, or hustle my useless self into the tack room to get him some treats. All of which I'll do. And I'll make sure that Himself is standing in fresh shavings under the breeze of his fan, with a hay bag full of expensive hay and a pristine water bucket before I leave. Then I'll return when the weather has cooled appropriately for his delicate self, dress him in fly mask and boots, cover him in flyspray, and turn him out on his lush private pasture next to his mare friend. Then he'll receive his soaked dinner complete with an array of supplements that boggles the mind (and bank account). His water tank will be dumped, scrubbed, and refilled.

Next week he'll get his feet trimmed by the specialist barefoot/rehab trimmer who has done wonders for his feet and overall soundness. Mind you, it's far too hot to ride Himself during the summer (he has respiratory issues and anihydrosis, both managed with some of those supplements mentioned above). But riding or no riding, the horse lives like a king. But once the weather cools off again, I'll break out the saddle (the one he finally approved of...it took 4 to find the right one), and enjoy hacking in the fields and along the bridle paths on the farm. Because Himself is not a fan of going round and round in dressage ring, so the gorgeous covered arena at our farm is just for us to look at as we ride past.

In a few months, he'll get his Adequan series, so that he can feel good while out hacking and hanging out in the pasture. This plus his daily Equioxx keeps a smile on his face.

Yes, Milton has no clue how the other half lives. It's his world and I'm living in it. But that's the only way I'll have it.

Lol, this is me. I joke that I'm only lowkey boujee because I don't wear fancy clothes or have a nice purse or visit the nail salon very often, so you'd never guess that I'm actually quite boujee when I want to be. And I have two horses that get all the best because they deserve it.
