How is everyone? I hope doing well. Getting cooler here I am so loving it/

Big doings here at Aubie house today. Its Remington's birthday. He is 7. Well I say that.dont really know what to do. Everyday is like birthday and Christmas rolled into one for that dog.

Maybe I will get him a little steak or something when at grocery store for supper. What are you having?

Or is it going out tonight?

Anything else going on this weekend?

Anything and everything welcome. And of course all the great pictures.

1. Happy Friday!! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY REMINGTON馃憫馃惗馃憫馃惗

2. No plans here except for one of us to finish Bushogging the pastures and unload the pallet of shavings I went after yesterday.

3. We are so dry- Middle Tennessee has been 25 days without rain and chances for any won鈥檛 be until the end of next week. 50% at best, unless the weather pattern does something different.

4. I made the dentist appointment for the horses. Last year Onery Rusty cost me an extra $25 in drug money because he was so good at grabbing the speculum. I told the office gal, if that same vet doesn鈥檛 pull in the driveway on the appointed day, I will know why馃槀馃槀

5. It was on the news that canine influenza is on the upswing. It is contagious but not zoonotic. They are warning folks to get their dogs vaccinated against it if they go to dog parks or their dogs are otherwise in close contact with dogs out of their household.

6. Supper is again a big question mark.

7. I have Pralines- real pralines from a shop on Bourbon St.馃槏馃槏. DH鈥檚 co-worker and his family went to New Orleans for a few days. I asked if they would please bring me some real Pralines and they did. I will have to make this box of eight last a long time馃崼馃崼

Our weather has been miserable all week. It's colder, around 10C/48F and we've had strong winds, torrential rain and heavy showers.

I was at the yard this morning. The fields are saturated and turning to deep, welly-sucking mud in places. It's getting harder to keep things dry. I managed to get a short ride just as the light improved after 8am and Blaze seemed very happy to be out and about and jogged most of the way. We had to turn back early to avoid a shower dumping apocalyptic levels of rain though.

Plans for later include housework, laundry, then working in the garden. I don't need to cut the grass, hopefully that'll be it until next year, but I've bushes and dead foliage needing trimmed. I'll also need to gather rubbish blown over from a neighbour's house. She's getting her roof re-felted and workmen removed the clay tiles yesterday leaving her with a temporary cover, however it did not survive the stormy shower this morning.

On Saturday or Sunday - depending on the weather - I'm meeting with a friend to shoot a few arrows. I've been using stretchy bands and this will be my first time with a bow. It'll be a light draw weight, training version, so that I don't re-damage my hand. Hopefully I can get back to my own bow in a few weeks.

I had chicken soup for lunch. It'll probably be salmon and veg for tea. I bought a load of fish from our local merchant yesterday afternoon, he buys fresh from the ports each morning and he had a nice selection.

I make pralines every year for Christmas. Let me know if you've finished those and I'll send you some.

@Caledonian Chicken soup is one of my favorites. That was lunch for the past two days. Sounds like you're busy with all the things on my to do list.

Supper? At this point no idea. Lunch today is last nights left overs 馃構 (fajita quesidillas). Hoping there is one last 馃.

Aside from an appointment I have today free. I plan on enjoying no kids except mine for the next 5 days including today.
With the weather so nice and the opportunity to run my errands today I plan on riding and working baby this weekend.

Halloo everyone. We are also in an extended dry spell. However it's been misty/soggy in the mornings which has been enough to start sprouting the grass, which has been dead brown all summer. Sadly, had to close the horses off from their nibbling area, as we're entering Founder Season here.

We had a gargantuan yellowjacket nest in the sawdust shed exterminated this week. I knew they were in there somewhere but didn't realize I'd been walking through their face-height flight path every day to fetch sawdust for the stalls! We will open the wooden box that the nest is in probably tomorrow. I'm dying to see it! Will post a picture if it's impressive enough.

My "big" task this weekend will be staining the last section of deck. Maybe today. Then Sunday maybe we'll have a barbecue. Chicken wings in the Weber kettle. Tonight will be a big salad.

The usual weekend hoofie trimming too, just mostly swiping the rasp around the edges a time or two. Oh, and starting to unpack all our wildfire evacuation go-stuff.

Happy birthday Remington! Tell Aubie you deserve that steak!

@aubie, you (and Remington) might appreciate this sight from town earlier this week. I went to pick up some takeout for dinner, and as I walked up to the restaurant, I saw these two jolly souls patiently waiting for their parents to come back out from dinner. Hopefully they got some burritos too 馃槈 Happy birthday to Remington!

We are moving into peak foliage season in Vermont. Typically the long weekend of Indigenous Peoples' Day is when peak foliage hits, which is particularly well time for businesses that benefit from tourists spending a three day weekend here. Temps have been a little warmer than usual all week, and the horses are happy to laze around out in the field all day soaking up the fall sunshine.

Dinner tonight- going out for Thai food. Our favorite Thai restaurant opened a second location closer to our house (45 minutes away instead of an hour- oh, the joys of rural living :LOL: ). I am going to be dreaming about their drunken noodles all day until it's time to go eat.

I'm actually taking all of next week off from work, and right now the forecast looks good for lots of riding. After the warm week we had this week, should be more seasonable next week, with temperatures going down below freezing overnight. Horses will probably be stuck in the dry lot because that frosty fall grass is not good for metabolically sensitive Morgans.

Happy Friday!

It's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada. The good: it's usually a great sales weekend at the store, so that will help the coffers. The less good: it's pretty messy in the store, so I imagine we'll be pulling a late-ish night tonight to finish getting things ready. We're open today, so it's hard to get anything done when you can't make an even bigger mess!! The bad: no Thanksgiving family dinner for us this weekend, as my mom has COVID. She's not too bad, and is getting that antiviral drug that starts with a P and that I always forget the name of. Somehow my dad hasn't caught it yet, so that's good.

Dinner tonight will probably just be a frozen lasagna or something. Last night, though, we were getting a little squirrelly from being at home/the store too much, so we went out and tried a new Indian food place just 20 minutes away!! Soooo exciting to have one in the area! Slowly but surely our dining selections here seem to be broadening their horizons.

Got out to ride on Sunday and Wednesday. Not sure if I'll get out again in the next few days, which is killing me because it is the BEST time of year to ride, and the fall colours here are so wonderful right now. I'll try to sneak out at some point soon... hopefully!! Next weekend is a busy one too. HUGE fall festival in town. After that, at least, things get slightly less ridiculous.

Happy birthday Remington!

I'm having 12 days off, which is more than I've had in two or three years.
Had some nice beach hiking yesterday. Saw a couple souls, but there was a heavy fog and some chill, so most people were inside.

Our 14 year old Papillon travels well and seems not bothered by staying in hotels. After our first hike of several hours, I thought we'd leave Gil in the truck while we went to another beach.

He barked furiously. The rules are that you do not leave a dog behind at the beach, even if he is old and tired. So I carried him part of the way and he was happy.

On the second beach there were lots of shell fossils.
Even though it is the middle of nowhere, there was a fine seafood restaurant. I had rockfish and cous cous. The dog was happy to stay in the truck at the restaurant.

In a little while, we're off to camping on Cape Cod. Other than Sunday, we'll probably be eating out (at least outdoors) most of the weekend. We usually go to a restaurant after making camp on Friday night - looking at the local brewery's menu right now. My dad's gf is staying at her family's cottage in Truro and has invited us over for dinner Saturday night. Sunday we'll probably make steak or, if we're lucky, fish. We are not usually lucky. (the ponds at the campground are stocked with trout by the state, yet we keep catching sunfish and catfish). The weather is supposed to be dry, but cool - a low of 44 on Saturday! Brr. Long johns and flannels are packed, as are extra blankets. Probably got going to swim, but fishing is likely, and there's a decent flea market to explore. Low-key weekend.

I didn't have a second shift this week, but I ended up picking one up because another medic called out suddenly, which is good. Worked Sunday, busy with swimming (and dancing!) Monday, Tuesday I was exhausted, worked Wednesday, saw Jasper yesterday. Had a nice walk on the trails - still working on "no, you can't just go faster when we get to those spots, you need to wait for my cue". He settled down after being made to turn and walk six steps backwards and halt. However, I'm getting better at moving him more smoothly. Someone went and readjusted his cinch, that was annoying (they'd set it down to where, if it's not tightened, the middle of the diamond is lined up correctly - but once you tighten it, it's right up into his armpit).

Plans for next week - I don't work again until the weekend, so lots of time to ride and swim in between. The swim meet I'm sure will come up much too soon for my taste.

Happy Friday all! Whew busy week and busy day鈥 got up and went to get a round bale early鈥. grrr enough about that鈥. Well not really, drive 35 miles to get a smaller round bale as the one I get closer are just too big! It鈥檚 hard for me to maneuver and can鈥檛 get it where I need it to be just where it stops鈥. Only $5 cheaper but I just can鈥檛 anymore鈥.

Heading to the beach in a few days for a few days鈥 and Olaf says NO you can鈥檛 leave a dog behind when beach is involved, Olaf thinks the beach trip is for him!

Tonight making a green and kalamata olive pizza, found a really good dough recipe using poolish dough?? So staying in鈥

This weekend is packing for me and the animals鈥. the animals stuff take more room than mine. It will be new dogs first time seeing the ocean! Looking forward to fishing and seafood! Fresh fish especially!

I love pad see eww as well. I just love the flavor of the wok that you can't really reproduce at home, even with a high BTU gas stove. And I like all noodles really spicy. Yum. Can't wait for later :)

Would love to see your pizza dough recipe. We have a great recipe for naan with a poolish starter: Naan w/ Poolish Recipe - Bryan Ford
I can definitely see how starting with poolish would work well in a pizza dough too.

Funny story, when we were in grad school (UNC Chapel Hill) the local pizza place had a Thursday night pizza special, any large pizza and a pitcher of beer for $10 or something super cheap like that. We always got our pizza with olives, both black and green. We went almost every week, and at some point, the Italian guy running the pizza oven would see us walk in the door and shout out..."Hey...it's black and green. Black and green here for their pizza!" I can still hear him yelling hello. There's something about really briny, vinegary green olives that is great on pizza. Enjoy!

OK, now I'm REALLY hungry!!

Coincidence..my friends birthday is today too! Wish Remington a happy birthday for me. 馃悤

I鈥檓 going out with her and her sister this evening to the mall just to do some shopping.
I got her a pillow for her birthday..yes a pillow, that鈥檚 what she asked for. 馃槄

I have no clue what鈥檚 for dinner..probably going out though!

my trainers coming today..and I have to get a load of shavings, whenever I have plans I challenge myself to see how much I can get done before I go out馃槀

I have the weekend off, yayy, though had to drag myself through work this morning, but it was around 50掳 so that was soo nice.

this weekend I have to mow a overgrown pasture I have for the horses, I usually move them to it late fall/early winter, then move them back to another one spring, and just alternate.
After I move them over I can start the building of the new arena! Yay!

the weather is not cool, it鈥檚 around 82掳 with 98% humidity, it鈥檚 not too bad though, and happy to see the sunshine!!

the trees here aren鈥檛 turning much, I love fall and all
the colors.

dreading winter, not looking forward to snow and freezing rain.. but then summer it鈥檚 roasting and practically everyone鈥檚 melting, spring..well..it explains itself..and wood carpenter bees are sooo annoying.
I think fall is the only season that鈥檚 the most relaxing, not to hot, not to cold, beautiful mornings and awesome for riding.

the fire ants are terrible here, I don鈥檛 know what it is but I found like 15 ant piles outside in the fields and had to put some fire ant killer on them.

who is excited for no-stirrup November? 馃槀
I personally love no stirrups.

Anyway, thankfully nothing to exciting here..

Hay Walkin! Here's a couple of Praline recipes. One's more like a Peanut Brittle type recipe and the other is a New Orleans style Praline Recipe.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups (7 1/2oz/213g) Pecans
  • 2 cups (16oz/450g) sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (1/2oz/14g) butter
  • 1/2 cup (4floz/115ml) water
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350掳F (180掳C). Place almonds on a baking sheet, and toast until golden brown and fragrant, about 10 minutes. Remove from oven, and set aside to cool.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Butter the parchment. Set aside for later.
  3. In a medium sauce pan, combine the sugar and water over medium-low heat. Allow the sugar to dissolve and once it does you can then bring the mix to a simmer. Brush down the sides of pan with a pastry brush dipped in water to prevent crystals from forming.
  4. Simmer without stirring until the caramel is deep amber in color, roughly 10-15 minutes.
  5. Straight away turn off the heat and add in the butter and pecans, coating them in caramel.
  6. Immediately pour the praline onto the prepared baking sheet. Be careful not to touch the caramel.
  7. Once hardened break into pieces.


    Ingredients:
    1 cup brown sugar
    1/2 cup granulated sugar
    1/2 cup heavy cream
    4 tablespoons unsalted butter
    2 tablespoons water
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1 1/2 cups chopped pecans

    1 Mix light brown sugar, granulated sugar, heavy cream, butter, water and salt in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until sugar dissolves. Stir in pecans and cook over medium heat until mixture reaches the soft ball stage, 238 to 240 degrees F on a candy thermometer. If you spoon a drop of boiling syrup into a cup of ice water, it will form a soft ball that flattens easily between your fingers.

    2 Remove pan from heat and stir rapidly until mixture thickens. Drop pralines by the spoonfuls, 1-inch apart onto parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Let cool completely until firm. Store in an airtight container.

Happy Birthday Remington! And Happy Thanksgiving Canadian Friends!

This weekend is Indigenous People's celebration, so 3 day weekend for us. We'll be going to the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City on Monday. They're have several different events for celebration, dancing, games, lectures, art, you name it, there's going to be a bunch of it.

Otherwise we'll be doing some fall preparation stuff, getting things ready for winter. It might rain, but weather won't get real nasty until later but need to be prepared rather than getting caught unprepared.

Dinner? Not sure. Haven't really dug through the freezer to see what's all available.

Hope your hand is getting better @Caledonian!

Eek, @dogpatch- yellowjackets are what landed me with a prescription for an EpiPen. That gives me chills to look at. Can you estimate how many might be living in there?!
I can only imagine it was in the thousands, with gallery upon gallery of larvae, and some newly emerging adults as we tore the thing down! I have thankfully never had an allergic reaction from a sting, but if I had ever riled the nest (which I don't know how I avoided!) I'm sure I'd have ended up in a hospital, since I'm not much at running anymore!
