So a friend of mine went to Char-O-Lot Ranch last week, he is big into Appies. He said they have this "foaling alarm" system where there are 2 magnets inside of the mare's vagina. When she starts to foal, the magnets separate, and send a signal to the cell phones of the farm employees. he actually witnessed a birth, and the alarm happening. Everyone drops what they are doing and run to the barn.

I have never heard of such a thing, but it is GENIUS!

Anyone know anything about the process? Is it healthy?

I have never heard of that. I'm going to tell my BO about it, she breeds horses and may find it useful.

Though I wonder how you insert magnets into a horses vagina, and how expensive that procedure even is. It sounds pricy.

foalert

I've looked into this system and while I love the idea and the freedom it offers, I found that for the small breeder (2 foals every year or so), it just wasn't cost effective. The components are just a little too pricey for me.

It's totally safe and healthy, and you can sew the components into the mare yourself or have the vet do it, it's not difficult. It works really well.

Wow, that is incredible! Someone spent some time of that idea, and it's so smart. So it doesn't actually go to the cell phone, it goes through a transmitter?

Is there anyone on here that's used one?

There's an autodialer that's part of the package. When it's time, it dials a list of programmed numbers and gives a message. It also sets off an alarm. It's really a fabulous thing. I don't use it, but I know a couple of big breeders who do and they haven't missed a single foaling since they bought the system.
