How do you free jump your horse?

does it simply mean just lunging your horse over a jump
or
do you run up to the jump with the horse then let it go
or
do you free lunge then just make the horse go over the jump


I have always wanted to know as I have wanted to see Buzz jump some higher jumps just for fun but was never sure how to go about it

Free jumping is no lunge no contact.

i set up a jump against the wall and a short chute. i usually just stand in the middle & cluck or wave a rope. the first time they free jump i will usually walk them up to the end to the chute the first time !
