I may be going to look at a gaited curly...but does anybody know what exactly kind of gait they do and how it is to ride? The owner's answer to this question was just that she is smooth. I would kind of like to know what to look for before I go see the horse though!

I belive that he personally had a fox trot.. But I'm not sure.

They usually foxtrot, but they are sometimes crossed with walkers.

I think it depends on the Curlie. I was told by his breeder that mine is "soft gaited", he has a running walk and the rest of his gaits are normal.

Hm I checked a couple of videos of horses foxtrotting and it doesn't look nearly as comfy as the running walk of the TWH. This may seem like a silly question, but how do I tell them apart? I am having trouble.

Hmms.. I'm not really positive, but I think it looks like a trot in slow motion?? Not too sure

It's about the same smoothness wise. My sister has a MFT, but I'm used to riding TWH. Some of our SSH are foxtrotter bred so some of them do it too. In my experience it can be just as smooth and fun.

Gaited Curleys are variation of Foxtrotters. So they will do the gaits that most foxtrotters do. That said their is quite a variation in gaits in the foxtrotter bred. The old fashion foxtrot is very smoth. The show foxtrot that they seem to be breeding for show horses is rougher. But most foxtrotters wil also dog walk, run walk, foxtrot and canter.

Go ride the horse and see if you like how it moves.

My Curly X Arab is gaited; she has what some Curly enthusiasts call the "Curly Shuffle" which about 10% of the breed have. My mare hasnt been tested, but I had read it up in a Horse Illustrated magazine once when they had an article on the breed. Yes, some of the Curly's gaits come from the Fox Trotters, but other's have been influenced by the Appaloosas. That breed was a big help at helping the Curly breed become what it is today. I think they call it the Indian Shuffle when an Appaloosa is gaited, but I could be wrong.

My mare's shuffle is between her flat walk and her trot and it goes at about five miles an hour. Her extended trot may be influenced by her gaiting, which is about 18 mph. Her canter, however, is only 8 mph. Her gait is very ground covering and even people that arent experienced with horse's notice that "she moves differently." You can definantly tell. Have you gone out to ride the horse that you are interested in?
