Getting into western riding?

Ok I was thinking of starting western riding with my little pony Patch here he is


and I was just wondering do you think this is a good set to start off with?

I just will be doing trail riding in a western saddle basically but I want to teach him to neck rein and all and eventually work up to riding in a curb bit and all like that

i wouldnt worry about working in a curb bit. they are mostly for hard competition in show rings and rodeo... if your just going to do pleasure riding and trail i would work in a snaffle maybe with a short shank.
