I'm going with a bunch of people (Barn owner, friends, Head of the rescue I volunteer for, and a bunch of volunteers) to a local horse auction tomorrow in Unadilla NY. This auction runs once a month in the winter and usually 70 - 100 horses run through it. Horses at this auction have sold for as little as $5 in the past! It's a notorious slaughter auction, and while a few nice horses run through it, the majority of horses are skin and bones, very ill, or old and untrained.

My barn owner is letting me and 2 friends each pick out a horse to save if we help with vet bills and such! Very fair! I'm on the lookout for a pregnant mare, save 2 lives for the price of one! I will let everyone know what we come home with!

The place where I ride has quite a few horses that have come from the Unadilla auction. Of course a few of them have their quirks but more have been used in lessons. Update us on what you find!

When you choose a horse choose one that will be cost effective to get ready to sell. A young gelding would be much easier to get trained and resold toa good home.

Today is the day!! Wish us luck! We won't be getting home till really really late so I will update tomorrow! I'm really nervous! It's going to be so hard seeing horses in this situation and not being able to help them all!

Good luck! I know it's hard, but try to remember to think with your head AND your heart. We can't save them all :(

My BO when I was a kid used to rescue a few horses every couple months from slaughter...my old jumper was an OTTB from an auction she rescued and then cold to me for the purchase price + food she'd put into him for a few months.

Good luck. Take pics and let us know how it all turns out!!

Ok guys here's the update! Thankfully not a lot of horses went through the sale last night, maybe around 40 which isn't bad since they were expecting over 70. There were 4 gorgeous drafts that went to good home and a ton of adorable mini's, including 2 pregnant mini mares and two 10 month old mini colts. Im pretty sure all the mini's went to good homes.

I personally did not get anything. The rescue I volunteer at bought 5 horses. A pregnant palamino paint with a nasty injury on her hind pastern, a papered and tattooed mustang mare, an emaciated mini stud, a yearling paint colt, and a pregnant black/white tobiano mare.

Unfortunately around 8-10 horses went to the meat buyer. Including this ridiculously gorgeous but completely untouched paint draft 3 year old stud. He was HUGE and dangerous! But it broke my heart anyway

I was sitting next to a man who had his 2 bay quarter horses in the auction, both of them (gorgeous horses) sold for meat, and the guy goes "Good, I got a decent amount of money for them!" Made me sick :(

same here every time i go to an auction i fall in love with at least one of the horses...once it was a beautiful black mare she was SOOOO sweet and the reason she was at the auction.....she had a birth defect that left her one front leg crooked she wasnt ridable but id still take her. i always wonder what happened to her...they were selling her as a brood mare(not a good idea the poor girl)

Will there be pictures of these horses on the rescue website? I would love to see the palamino paint! Those are my favorite kind of horses.
