Hi
What are your opinions on grey hunt coats for hus and hunt seat pleasure? I have a chestnut, wasnt sure about grey on him, and I know some people think they look unprofessional. Do you think a judge has a preference I should take into consideration? Do you think tan breeches go with grey?

Thanks!

I think only a few people/horses can pull off the grey coat. The problem is, you'll stick out like a sore thumb. Which is great if you and your horse and your equitation is perfect, but not so good if it's not - because everyone usually wears black or navy.

For my chestnut I just got a hunter green coat, which I love because it is a subtle pop of color that always looks good on chestnuts. I am also thinking about getting a chocolate coat as well.

When in doubt, get a navy or black and then use the shirt underneath as a tasteful pop of color. Maybe even a customized collar to go with it.

I showed my chestnut Oldenburg gelding in a grey coat with a light blue shirt. They are perfectly common in the rated rings...i don't know what kind of showing you do but in USEF world grey coats are everywhere in the hunter ring.

i personally like grey coats as i wear one myself, they're perfectly acceptable in the hunter ring and may catch the judge's eye but certainly don't look unprofessional. everyone has favorite color combinations for a specific horse and rider. i think grey coats look fantastic on chestnuts especially :)

I looooove grey coats! Just make sure that you're comfortable and confident in standing out a bit!
