Well, im out of shape, Bear's out of shape, and both of us are ready to ride! The farrier cleared him to start him back up slowly with riding. I was thinking maybe every other day? And if I cant ride one day, then lunge.

I have to say, im still soar from riding on Monday, and it is now Wednesday. Im quite embarassed... :oops:

I will still do whatever you guys think will be best for him. I REALLY want to work on getting him off the forehand, that is my big goal. So give me tips to get him infront of my leg. I dont feel like just getting him moving forward is getting him off the forehand... And since im dumb, maybe make it almost step-by-step like, that way I can understand it to its fullest... :wink:

So would every other ride be okay? Start out with short rides, or just mainly do walk for an hour or so? What should I work on while riding? Tips to get him off the forehand?

My favorite activity is transitions. The hardest for me are downward without having my horse lean on her front end. You have to just feel a horse out though, if you're letting the horse lean on you transitions can make it that much worse.

go to the library, see if they have 101 arena exercises. Its a great start.

I will try and find that book, if I cant find it I will just buy it, as it seems like a good book it have in the barn. ;]

And lucky I love transitions and so does Bear. Would lateral work be good to? He is OK at it, though he is a bit rusty... =]

lateral work might lighten him up, just use more leg and less hands.

I think you said he was out of work for two months? It shouldnt be to hard to get him back in shape. I would keep your rides shorter at first, and just keep him working throughout the ride. If hes not used to contact, it may take him longer to get the hang of things. I have a hard time assessing how much is too much contact, so I usually dont have as much as I should. Mirrors really help. But, it looks like you ride in an outdoor?

when i brought my ex point-to-pointer back into work i did loads of long and low work. it's great to begin with. do loads of circles and transitions. keep the riding sessions short and build them up gradually.
btw - for rider fitness i'd reccomend pilates ball - great for core strength :)
