I recently took in a 13-15 year old paint mare, and has really bad rain rot as well as dropped weight very fast this past winter. She also is not shedding like she should be. Where I live the temp has reached 80's and 90's. I have been brushing her twice a day and she just isn't shedding very much. Any recommendations to help her gain weight? I've also ordered Mane Tail & Groom to treat her rain rot, would it be smart to get her a full body shave as well? Any help is greatly appreciated.

When I got one of my horses, he had really bad rain rot. I treated it with betadine, every time I saw him (maybe 3 times a week). I also, at the advice of someone else, added vitamins A & E to his diet. It took several months.

The coat not shedding could be a sign of cushings. Do you have a picture of your horse that you could share?

Ditto, Dropped weight and not shedding sounds like Cushings.

You can probably get the vet out to draw blood to check cortisol level but spinning blood to check ACTH is not something vet’s cando in their facility’s.

MyCushings horse’s ACTH test has been pushed out to April 6th due to the lab informing the vet facility it is a low priority in lieu of other issues. They could not guarantee the blood would be spun in a timely fashion to guarantee accuracy.

I would ask the vet anyway and also ask if the lab they use is maintaining a normal schedule for standard things such as ACTH tests - and let us know:):)

Yes pictures would be a huge help if you care to post them. No tack on the horse. Have it in good light:)

Rain rot: A betadine wash should help. You can also buy pure, oral Vitamin E (no fillers, no selenium) and start adding 3,000 IU daily to the diet. Skin issues of this nature are generally due to a weakened immune system. Vitamin E will boost the immune system:)

I third the Cushing statement. No shedding is always the Cushings red flag!

As for rain rot, I actually like the brown listerine mixed with water. 1 part listerine to two parts water in a spray bottle and spray it on. Rub it in and it really helps heal up rain rot fast. We've always used it and it works great!
