You need to put his stirrups down he seems pretty tall. id put them down 1-2 holes maybe.
You seem like you know what your doing. :) cute horse. Easy on the mouth seems to be pulling to much on his mouth. He needs to post not sit..
So help him learn to post.

Thanks!, it's hard because he doesn't know what it should feel like and the saddle is small so it's hard to judge

You can sorta tell where his leg position should be based on pictures of yourself and other riders. You can see the angle of your leg and his should be similar. I agree that they probably need to go down 2 holes or so.

haha, good job for his first trot! I wish my BF was interested in learning a bit about horses, but then I guess I am not really interested in gaming and he is. :p

you and me both my dad reallllly dislikes my boyfriend cause he's a complete townie,
horsexquad, is your bf interested or did you convince him some way if so what tips do you have haha :p also not bad for his first time trotting :) sometimes we tell the kids if they wanna learn to trot but aren't sure about holding the reins as well to hold on to the saddled to help themselves do the rising trot

Take his reins away when he's on the longe! Do you have a schoolie and a saddle that would fit your BF better? It's hard to learn to ride properly when you don't have equipment that fits.

Good luck with teaching him to ride. Many of my sessions teaching my husband (and I coached professionally for years) ended badly - usually with me telling him to "get off the f*cking horse".

Yes, take the stirrups down a hole or two... also, try to do things to help him build a seat. For example, have him two-point at the walk, then try posting at the walk, before he trots. Bareback riding can also help.
If I were you, I'd take off those reins and just lunge the horse. Have him put his arms out, touch the ears, tail, touch his toes, etc. Stuff to build his confidence and teach him to rely on his seat instead of the reins. I ruined my first pony's mouth balancnig myself on it and wish I'd known better.
Oh, and since he has the opportunity, he might feel more comfortable with the horse if you do a bit of groundwork first :)

Good luck! At least your boyfriend is interested in horses. None of the guys I know will touch one with a 10-foot pole xD

okay definitely put the stirrups down a hole or two.... other than that you know what you are doing and great at doing it... have him practice the sitting trot with one stirrup and slowly work on his balance by working on it with no stirrups.

My boyfriend learning to lunge a horse ebfore anything. I also made him learn to post at aa walk but he didnt get to do much trotting before I sold my percheron mare. He does the same thing your bf does, and puts his hands up really high. -_- Spooked my mare once and that taught him to keep his hands down lol. I agree the poor guy's stirrups are too short, once theyre down more and he can stretch into them he wont bounce as much. I wouldnt want to teach him its ok to use the horses mouth to catch yourself though. I think id much rather have my bf grab mane or fall off ( lol ) before catching himself ( hes a big guy) in any horses mouth. Best of luck with the lessons! You got him on a horse now see if you can get him in breeches ha ha ha
