Last weekend, my DH and I made the trip up to Lake Luzerne, NY for a long weekend of relaxing with the horses. This is the second time we have been up there - we had so much fun last year, we went an additional day this year!
The campsite facilities are nice, with firepits and picnic tables at each site, flush toilets a short walk from the site, and showers a short drive down the road. Most people stay in tents or campers. There are permanent paddocks for the horses.
The first day we arrived just before lunch and went on a several hour ride with the couple of friends we normally meet with, plus a few people who had never been horse camping (and in one case, had never had her horse out on trails before!). The pace was leisurely, which wasn't bad for an unusually warm day (temp was upper 80s and humid.. summer flashback). The local trails in general have nice footing and pretty views.
The second day was the day we planned to be in the saddle all day. We were going to see if we could connect some bits of trail on our way to the Hudson river. We had a sketchy map provided by some other people staying at the campsite and a bunch of enthusiastic horses. We set a less leisurely pace, which my body certainly appreciated (walking bothers my still-healing leg and my back, go figure).
The big climb of the day

The next day we gave the horses a break and trekked down to Saratoga Raceway. It was Travers Stakes day, so the place was bursting with people. Always entertaining to people watch in such a crowd.. we saw every manner of dress from pajamas to formal. We celebrated with a lady who won $6 on her first bet ever. We listened to a man sitting in front of us casually mention to his buddy that he lost $50K betting over the course of the day. I don't gamble, but it was fun to watch all the same.
On Sunday, we were in the saddle early to get in a last ride before heading home. We explored some new trails up to a lookout point we had heard great things about. Indeed, the view at the top was breathtaking!
Then we packed up and headed home. Just to keep the trip interesting, about a mile from our exit off the interstate, we heard a tremendous BANG and looked in the mirrors to see bits of tire flinging off the trailer. The blowout actually ripped the fender right off the trailer!! :-( Changing a tire on the side of the interstate is never much fun, but we got lucky that a nice Statie stopped and his car being there at least got people to move out of the right lane.
