Hi there,
Over the past few days, I have noticed a lot of nasal discharge in my 16yo mare's nostrils. She is still eating and acting normal, so I assume this is just a cold?
Any clues as to what could have caused this? Is there any good way to treat it, or should I leave it alone?
Thank you!

Influenza, Equine Herpes Virus, any sort of bacterial infection....there are lots of possible causes. You need to monitor her temperature and keep her quarantined.

Is it from a single nostril or both?

Both nostrils rules out the likelihood of a tooth root infection that is causing pus in the sinus cavity. So, likely one of the common upper resp. viruses or a bacterial infection. Or even a bacterial infection secondary to a virus.
