Ok so I have an 8 year old grey purebred arabian gelding. Two weeks ago a he got a bruise in his left front hoof that turned into an absess. We treated that and then a week later he kicked a panel and with his back right foot and that swelled and then 5 days after that he got a huge lump on the side of his neck. It was 10 inches long 4 inches wide and about an inch out. The vet came out (for the third time) and said to do DMSO and furison on it twice a day till it went down. The big one is almost gone now but he keeps breaking out in little quarter size hives at least I think it is hives they are all over his body. Could it be bug bites as well? Would he be reacting to them if he is on Bute and DMSO? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

How long have you had him?
Do you use fly spray, or have you recently switched brands?
Does he get any turnout time?
Where are the hives?
If they are all over his body, I would think they could be from bug bites. But it is hard to tell. Could you post some pictures?

we have a paint gelding that gets hives then sores all over his chest and barrel. He is apparently allergic to the bug bites, scratches himself with whatever he can ie... fence, barn, limbs,etc.. he will make a sore and then that sometimes becomes infected. We have to keep fly spray on him, but that doesn't help that much. and then give him antibotic when the sores get bad. Have given steroids to help with the inflamation. He was worse as a younger horse, he is now about 30 and last summer was not bad for him, I have hopes that this summer will be even better.

What kind of fly spray do you use? Pyrhana aerosol fly spray works the best where I live. A lot of people swear by Endure. You could also try a fly sheet, at least to cover his barrel.

Zip's hives started with abscess treatment

If they are hives I can give you the whole run down of what happened with my horse. The hives lasted 3 months.

Thank you guys for your reply's i think they are just bug bites. I have a full body fly sheet on him right now and keep his legs fly sprayed and that seems to do the trick! Thanks so much for your reply's!!
