Hi everyone,
Well, at my last riding lesson my instructor said to me, "Kayla, this is the season when I know about free horses." She went on to tell me that she knew about a horse/pony that someone was giving away because the person is going to college. I've sent my riding teacher an email asking for more details, I'm very hopeful, because I know my instructor wouldn't try to get me to take a bad horse. She hasn't replied yet, but I hope she will soon! I think this horse has been used for 4-H shows, and stuff like that. Also, don't just think I'm going to take this horse because it's free. Last year I was offered a free horse, but it turned out she had been foundering for a year. I'll make sure it's right for me, I'm not that stupid
I've been riding for four years, so I know I'm not going to drop horseback riding.
Anyways, enough of my jabbering! I have lots of questions, and I hope you guys can answer some, or better yet, all of them!
I'm from Stillwater Minnesota (near the Twin Cities), just in case that helps with knowing price ranges.
How much do these things cost, and how often do you have to have them done:
farrier
worming
shots
vet checks
hay
grains
I know I didn't say anything about boarding, but I'm going to see if I could board at my 4-H leader's house. Hopefully for a good deal.
I'm a complete newbie to horse ownership, so if I forgot anything, let me know. I'm trying to figure out if I can afford a horse. I'm only 16 and my parents won't pay for anything. I have a job, and I make probably about $400 (probably a little more than that) a month. I have a couple grand stashed away too. I figured out that I probably take in $5,000 a year (with taxes taken out) I've thought long and hard, and I think I can afford a horse, but I would like others' opinions.
I feel like I've probably forgotten tons of stuff, so feel free to add any extra advice!
Thank you!
