Hi Guys,

I wanted to know of there is any racing fans or any people involved in racing in the horse forum community. I absolutely love horse racing (there are some aspects of it that I really do not like as well) and thought it would be fun to start a discussion about it. I am just a spectator of the sport (and a photographer, but not a professional one hehe :)) My dream one day is to become a racehorse trainer. I know thats not going to happen, but hey I can dream :p. Anyone else a racing fan or involved in the sport?

I work in standardbred racing. I've done it full time for the last....about 6 years. I fell into it by accident actually. It's not something I ever thought I'd get into, but I'm glad I did. I have learned so much about health care and lameness and about management in general. I also fell in love with the sport of racing - it has given me a lot of experiences I never would have had otherwise, such as travel. Not to mention that it has provided a decent living for my family as well. There are negetive aspects to it as well, don't get me wrong, I can go into them if you want.
If you want to get into racing, I say go for it! It's not as hard as you may think. Do you have a local racetrack? Even if you want to go with the thoroughbred racing, check out a standardbred track if there is one nearby. Approach different trainers and ask if you can muck stalls in exchange for learning the game. You may even get paid! abother idea is to post an add in a tack shop at a track or feed store frequented by trainers. I know the standardbred industry has a youth placement program as well. I'll get you a link if you would like. Start small, work up. I started out mucking stalls and feeding. Within 6 months I was rubbing horses at the races and 6 months after that started jogging and training. If you are dedicated you can climb the ladder pretty fast.

Wow! Thats awesome. Yea I usually go to Monmouth Park. The only thing is that how would you find a trainer to ask this? You are not really allowed on the backside of the track, so I never really knew how to start. I always wondered about Standardbred racing too. I watch it sometimes on TV and they seem to have a completely different strategy to win races then the thoroughbreds do. Of course I guess they would since its a different form of racing. lol :)

My family used to own standard bred race horses. The racetrack is actually where I started to fall in love with the horses, myself. We haven't had them in almost ten years, but I still love to go to the track and watch them race.
