I have a two year old daughter an four year old son each have a miniature horse that they ride and take care of. My son who is fairly into the whole horse thing is outgrown the mini. Should I move him up to a pony or go straight to a gentle saddlebred? I'm planning to put in a round pen for him to get more comfortable with riding. I like the idea of a welsh or larger pony but it won't be long before it would be outgrown. My daughter who I'm sure will set the barrel racing world on fire one day is very small an likes the minis. I really thought this was going to be a bigger deal to my son but not so! I know I'll have many years of riding with her and I think his interest will increase when he can get out and ride the farm. Also what's a good size for a round pen? Thanks.

I personally would go for an old gentle, been there done that, horse. I just haven't met very many nice ponies, I have only had experience with mean old shetlands who wanted to rub people off on fences and who took hours to catch. I know not all ponies are like that, but I prefer a horse.

If you find the right large pony i would go with that poniez may be mean sometimes but they make a darn good rider haha however an older safe horse would be just as good if he is of the more timid type rider :)

I got an older quarter pony for my kids. My oldest son rides and my daughter is already telling me that Lyric is for her as soon as she's tall enough :p

I prefer a little been there, done that when it comes to mounts for children.

My wifes horse would do fine for a starter horse except he has to be prodded everywhere you ride he goes. He refuses to run an spooks at almost nothing. Is the round pen the way to go for little riders?

To start, yes. Too much arena and it could be over whelming. How are they as riders? Do they know their basis steering and using their legs? Regardless of pony or horse, stay close to them (the mount) as even the most bomb proof have bad days and I wouldn't let the kids I worked with on their own unless they were very capable and simply old enough.

As for the mount, a been there done that horse is wonderful especially one that teaches them or helps them learn how to do things like tacking up and ride without too much trouble. A motivator, instead of a challenge.

You'll figure it out :)

When I was four I got an older Quarab ex-lesson horse, and she was great. THEN I got a pony when I turned 9, and that pony was a STINKER. Honestly I would get a horse first, then a pony. To me ponies have always been harder to ride than older horses.

We are definitely still learning basics. I just want to keep interest strong an work them in slowly to new challenges.

For a first larger mount I would go with an older smaller horse instead of a pony, especially since you say they are still learning the basics.

old small quarter horse former trail ride drinking horse.

While I am sure there are nice ponies and mean QH's... play the odds and the opposite is much more likely.

Ok thats a nice way of saying , "ponies are mean, stubborn and a pain in the rear."

If you can find a big pony thats older and broke to death their great to have. I know of 2 of them currently for sale, Appy ponies. Smaller is usually less intimidating anyway. Our kids horse for my step sister is a 21 year old broke as can be 14 hand Quarter Horse.
