So for the past three days I've been at a camp at my barn (which was SUPER fun :D). One of the broodmares was already 15 days overdue to have her foal, so it was expected to have the foal whilst we were all on camp. On the first night, she went into foal! It was so exiting and a big experience for us all to get to watch her give birth and be the first ones to see the new filly. She's absolutely gorgeous. She's a purebred Hanoverian - bay with a star, snip and one white coronet. Very very cute :D But look how BIG she is! These photos were taken about 8 hours after the foal was born. Sheesh she is big. Poor Lilly! (The dam). And check out how her cannon bones are the same size as her mothers' already  and the mother is 16.1hh ...

That is a BIG baby. Poor mamma. The baby looks healthy and alert! Congrats to the owners and the proud mommy!

These pictures just disgust me! It's green there! The ground is covered in snow and it's -35 C here today!
Nice baby! It's quite normal for the foal to have nearly the length of cannon bone of the dam. The length of the cannon bone does not really grow to much in a horses life. The girth of the bone grows quite a bit, but the length does not change a whole lot.
Still, she's going to be tall!

Haha well I'm in Australia so it's summer here and the temp's about 35 degrees celcius at the moment (about 95 degrees farenheit). It's STINKIN hot. That's interesting about the cannon bone thing, I never knew that :) And she's predicted to be about 16.3hh when she's fully grown. Thanks for all the commments guys :D

Aww, how exciting!! I would LOVE to witness a mare giving birth and seeing the foal right after. The closest I've seen is a couple days afterwards. They are such a cute pair! :)

What a great broodmare. Obviously can't be her first foal. I like the size of the joints on that little thing. I would be curious to see how big she turns out to be. You know how tall dad was?

No this wasn't her first foal. She had her first 3 years ago, then she had twins but unfortunately they both had to be put down. Yeah I know the sire, I think he's probably 16 hands or so. He's gorgeous too =)

Foals are born with about 70% of the leg length they will have when they are older, so she's not uncommonly big or anything. I bet she will be the size of her mother.
