I know it really depends by region, and if you competent for example you will have more expenses than just trail riding, but I am curious how much it costs for the basics to keep a horse (again I'm just looking to have an estimation/idea). So how much do you spend on board, vet, deworming, emergency fund, tack, extra supplements, farrier etc etc? Thanks!

£1300 to rent stable and place in a shared field.
£300 minimum for hay a year
£100 for hard feed... this is for a pony that does not need much feeding ., she survives on grass and hay , I know someone with a different type of horse whose spend is at leaset £1500.....
£400 for hoof care.. this is for a pony who goes barefoot
£200 for regular boosters and dental care
emergency fund is unlimited... this year I think it came to about £300 between a swollen eye , then a swelling on her jaw.

this is for a no problem pony I do all the looking after myself..... if you need help with care you will need to add more costs in .

a lot. and nobody like to add it up... I don't drink, I dont' smoke, I don't go out, I never have a holiday. my life is just working to have a horse.. endless enjoyment , even the mud and the cold, if she wasn't there I would have no reason to get out of bed...

I think ours is on the cheaper side, but we board at a lovely stables and only feed good quality hay ( the grain we feed Mr Darcy is added in) . So adding up farrier, board and worming, it comes to about $3600 a year per horse, and worth every penny. :) That is not including treats, apples, carrots, things that Ivan breaks in the barn, toys I buy him that he destroyed, fly sprays, fly masks that Ivan destroys, and the cost of fixing the automatic waterer the day he played with it and flooded his stall... ;-)

The horse? HAHAHAHAHAH

THE HORSES are pretty reasonable $$$ wise. But we have a small ranch we can 'run them through' in terms of vet bills and tax exemptions and tax DEDUCTIONS... as far as Uncle Sam knows, six horses are vital to keeping up with 15 heifers and one goofy looking retired longhorn roping steer... they are working horses (Working hard at doing as little as possible is what they're doing 99% of the time)

So, aside from the regular check ups, Coggins tests (They're good for a year here), vaccinations, wormings in spring and autumn, and feed and hay through the winter.... they're actually not too bad. I can't tally it up, because none of these 'bills' are due at the same time. We buy feed weekly through the winter, and how bad a winter we have dictates how much feed and hay we have to buy.

Uhm.

Its the TACK that bleeds my pocket book down. I confess to having ulterior motives for opening a tack shop soon....
