okay maybe i should elaborate a little more haha. He has winning times at every race. 2 years ago he was almost a NBHA world qualifier. He then got spooked, but now he's running some amazing times for me.

I've run several NBHA world qualifiers that I wouldnt price over 2k nowadays. Unless you have a futurity or a rodeo caliber horse, they just arent fetching much of anything.

You really can't rate how good a horse is by whether it almost qualified for worlds. NBHA worlds runs in a 4D format. I've seen some reeeeeally knarly horses make it there that I wouldnt even let near my barn.

If your wanting to sell your barrel horse, get videos warming up, on the pattern, in the alley, etc. No one will buy a horse based on "it almost made it to worlds"

This statement also can lead a potential buyer to think he may have some pre-exhisting vices. Folks don't want a problem horse.
There was a horse in my area that was run in futurities, did well. On one of his runs his bonnet slipped down, covered his eyes into the first barrel. He panicked and ran into the concrete wall. After that he was turned out to pasture. Two years ago, the girl decided to try to get him legged up to run again. He was breezing 2D winning times before he was in shape. BUT because of his anxiety into the first barrel (after hitting the wall behind it) he began panicking to the first, then in the alley way, then near the arena. While he was able to run for a short time, his running days were limited because of his vice. Even though he was, and still MAY, be able to run those winning times...no one has wanted to follow through with it.

Point being, if you just want a realistic estimate on what a horse is worth, I'd really try to hit up some local horse traders, auction houses, and apraisers. The prices that people are getting for their horses differ from one area to the next, one month to the next. The one I just bought was $4800, marked down from $5500. But had he been for sale up north, he may have sold for $6-8k, or further west for maybe less. Its all way to subjective.

And just so your aware, I wasnt demeaning your horse, you just didnt give enough information and the information you provided was bleak.
Is he registered? If so, with what association?
Been raced? If so, what was his speed index?
Previous winnings?
Age?
Conformational faults?
Even stuff as simple as does he load, clip, tie, stand well for the farrier? Barefoot or shod? Rims? Wedges?
How does he cope with other horses?

It wasnt meant as an attack to you or your horse. I was just going off of what you had stated.

Age 15 (i know older, and thats why im tryin to get a price check before i completely give a full asking price)
Height: 15.3
Registered: No, full Appendix QH though.
Color: Sorrel
Times: He runs 2D times pretty much every race, but every horse has good and bad days.
He loads, ties, stands for farrier, clips, bathes, gets along with other horses, dogs, and my show goats. No buck, bite, or kick. Ill try to get pictures up.
He only spooked because he rides in a hackamore, and that particular rider had insisted on using a bit, and he's never had one, He was raised on a hackamore. So when she tried to turn him he bolted, then just stopped in the middle of the arena. Ive run in 4H, local playdays, NBHA, and just messing around in my back yard. I took him to one halter show last month but he's all barrel. He's got great conformation, and rides so easy. I've ponied my little brother off of him. Hope this gets some real answers? Please and thank you.

You've got a couple things going against you here. Like you said earlier, his age. The fact that he's grade, and that he isnt consistant or taken a bit.

Do you have any pictures of him? Seeing his confo will make a big difference. As a grade horse he has to SOLELY rely on his conformation and ability. A lot of people won't take a chance on a grade horse. They don't bother me so much. I'd buy a grade horse if it was conformed the way I like and had a good mind.
Another thing that might scare some folks is that you said he's never taken a bit. Not everyone likes hacks and a lot of bad habits can arise with them. But in most cases it's not difficult to introduce a bit no matter what age.

The best I can say is if you have confo shots of him and a video of him under saddle, that would be a big deciding factor here.

I've seen grade horses go for 8k-10k but they were younger consistant 1D horses. Very proven with a long list of winnings.

Now, I'll say this, there is one grade horse that I know I'd snatch up in a heartbeat. He's ugly, not really well conformed, and has a few quirks because of previous situations. (he was severly abused) So as a result he would basically put anyone in the corner of the stall or pasture if he felt threatened. Here's the hitch with him, I spent a lot of time around him while I was working for his owner. It was my job to keep him and her other horses in shape. I completely fell in love with this ugly nasty thing. Once he knew you, he knew you. When he'd run from everyone else, he'd coming running up to me, he never tried to kick me, and he was as docile as a sleeping puppy dog. All he needed was someone to trust. While he'd had a history of tossing other riders/trainers, he was a solid mount for me. Never had a glitch. We got into some really sticky situations where had he made a move, we'd be screwed...but he didnt. He had a lot of heart and try. I would take that grade horse in a HEARTBEAT. But... if I were trying to sell him, he'd be worthless.

It's all in who is looking for what. He may not be worth anything to one person and to the next he could be a dream horse. It's really hard to say for sure. But a vid and pics would help put a base price on him.
