I was just being silly during my last ride, And said to my instructor "I wonder if my boy used to race, he's very left footed" she really didn't think it possible, but she checked his lip and sure enough he was tattooed.
I was so surprised to learn my boy used to race, and I'd really like to find out some information about him, like if he was any good at racing (lol), his racing name, his pedigree etc..

So I tried to decipher his tattoo, a three digit number, I think I have to last two digits but the first one is very hard to read.

He's 13 years old, foaled March 12th 1997, and and Appendix QH, so I guess he would have done Quarter horse racing.

Does anyone have any links or anything to sites where I can punch this info in and find some stuff out? Thanks.

I haven't found any for Appendix QH's, no. :(

With TB's you can, but IDK about Appendixes.

That's a major bummer. I want to know but I'm not willing to pay 50 bucks. If I was going to pay I'd actually take the time to get the full tattoo too and not the last two digits, but my guy does not stand still for that.

A Quarter Horse tattoo has four or five numbers followed by a letter, so it sounds like part of your guy's tattoo may have faded. You can call AQHA and as far as I know, they will still look up a tattoo number for free and tell you the registered name and number of the horse, and its last recorded owner.

Their customer service number at AQHA is 806-376-4811. BUT, you have to know the tattoo number, or aty least have a good idea of what it is so they have a place to start their lookup.

I have heard that shining a flashlight thru the lip can help, as can using black light. You will probably need a helper or two to hold the horse, the light, the lip....

Curious-- how do you know his birthdate? Do you have registration info on him? If so, you can use his registration number or registered name to look up info-- registered Quarter Horses always race under their registered name if they are racing at approved tracks.

I know his birth date because the last time the vet came they sent us some papers and the papers said his birthday on them.

Have you checked with his previous owner? If the papers the vet sent you are yellow, it is his Coggins and the date would be an estimate.

Sometimes people will put the registered name and registration number on a coggins-- I always do. If you can look at the papers you ahve for him and see if there is more info to be found, it could help!
