So, you know how the jumping courses have markers or whatever to denote start and finish? A rider in my class navigated the course perfectly, rode through the end markers, and then the horse got happy and decided to jump an additional fence. They DQ'd her saying she was off course. If she rode through the finish area before it happened, I would think it wouldn't matter, but that's not the way the judges saw it. Thoughts?

I would have to agree with you. If you finished the course and crossed the finish line, whatever happens after that shouldn't matter.

Does anyone have a rule book? I'm interested to know what the rules say about this.

From the USEventing rulebook:

(4) jumps or attempts to jump an obstacle which does not form part of the course or
omits an obstacle. Obstacles not included in the course should be crossed but failure
to do so by the arena party will not preclude the elimination of a competitor for
jumping an obstacle not forming part of the course.
b. An uncorrected deviation from the course incurs elimination (EV154.2e-.i and EV154.2p

So, technically, they shouldn't have gotten eliminated because she wasn't ON course. She completed it before she did the jump. My assessment is that it was bull that she was eliminated

Yeah, I didn't think that was right. I feel bad for her. She would have gotten 3rd place, but instead was DQ'd.

i agree with the ruling, she could have jumped it backwards or over a jump that was set higher than her level. yeah it sucks but at the same time its dangerous. i cant in a million years see that being ok at a rated or recognized show.

^ It was AFTER the round though. They shouldn't be able to penalize you for jumping a jump after your round. Sometimes they actually let you do that if you are having trouble with a fence.

I've seen people do it before and they were not penalize. Yeah, it was strange and probably not good to do, but it shouldn't have been a matter for the judges who should have stopped judging her when she crossed the finish flags

you can also get penalized for something that happens in warm up or right after you leave the dressage arena, so why would this be any different ? if you can jump something after you cross the finish why cant you jump something before you cross start ?

its also probably not the judge who decides, but the TD

Totally bad form to jump ANY unauthorized jump in competition. The only jumps you should jump, at all, are jumps properly flagged and used as it is intended to be used. You never jump a jump you are not supposed to jump anywhere on the show grounds.

I was placed first in a large event and I accidentally jumped a warm-up backwards. BRAIN FART! I didn't know until the very last moment that they decided not to eliminate me. Two others also did the same and the flagging was deemed inadequate. I was lucky and was ready to accept elimination.

Rules;
not) to get into position to jump an obstacle;
5. DEVIATION FROM THE COURSE
a. It is a deviation from the course when the competitor:
(1) does not follow the course as set out on the published plan;
(2) does not cross the starting line or the finishing line between the flags in the correct
direction (EV154.3e and EV154.3p);
(3) does not jump the obstacles in the order or in the direction indicated,
(4) jumps or attempts to jump an obstacle which does not form part of the course or
omits an obstacle. Obstacles not included in the course should be crossed but failure
to do so by the arena party will not preclude the elimination of a competitor for
jumping an obstacle not forming part of the course.

b. An uncorrected deviation from the course incurs elimination (EV154.2e-.i and EV154.2p)
