I used to feed Pistol 50lbs of grain per week at $4.65 per bag. I would give him 1 bale of hay at 1.25 per bale. Shots would cost me $100 per year. And his feet would cost me $25 per visit and I think I did them every 10 weeks.....

Today I feed Pistol 75-100lbs of grain per week at $17.95 per bag. He gets about a bale of hay a week at $6.00 per bale, his shots cost me $200 per year and the farrier is $25 per visit at 6-8 weeks....

Can you believe...in 21 years... the cost of a farrier has stayed the same for a trim? I think I paid $50 for aluminum shoes... and now they are $65 but even that is barely any increase.... compared to the cost of feed and shots!

i know when the price wet sky high we were paying over $9 for a bag of grain (co-op) now since it's down so is the price of grain....our vet gives us a pretty good price on shots as for the farrer either my neighbour or i trim our horses feet....(barefoot)

We haven't had horses for 21 years or anything..and our vet is pretty "cheap" and also hasn't really increased a lot..but our farrier refused to take more money or raise the price of his work too! Hmm Funny that that seems to be a bit of a trend!

Getting old???? please!!! LOL Old is a state of mind. As for the changes in price, oh yeah. Lots of things have gotten expensive. The thing that pops first to my mind is tack. We have 5 custom made billy cook saddles at the house that were bought for about $650 a piece in the 60's and 70's. Now you can't even look for a custom saddle for less than 2 grand. :( Mine's not custom but it fits and at 750 for a roping saddle, who can complain? Alfalfa here is going for about 200 a ton, that is if you can find someone who still has any. Don't know why it is so hard to find, we didn't have a very dry summer. HHHHMMMMM.........Oh well.

Maybe if you gave up your life of carrot crime you wouldn't age as much!

It's rough isn't it! one reason why I am cutting down to 1 horse and I think I will always keep it that way. Now our days, unless you own a really nice property with a good horse set up, it's just to expensive to keep horses.
No doubt a luxury :D

Well lets see when I first got into horses I paid $1 for farrier to trim now I pay $25. I paid .10 to .25 for a bale of hay now I raise my own but can buy grass for $1.50. Oats was .50 a bushel ( 32 lbs ) now its $2 but I raise most my own. It costs me just under $2 to worm a horse years ago I gave them chewing tobbacco. I vaccinate myself and only a 3 way I think it was right at $7 a horse this spring.

Honest carrot thief? :? I know you've stolen from me but I've turned yours down in the past. I've been considering taking min back from you and my most recent carrot thief, Kentucky. I've taken back ONE measly carrot from a big carrot thief we all know and <cough> love, but won't mention any names. <ahem, cough>

I wonder if your ears are burning, Mike?
