Boy, without more information, there is really no way to tell. Start with this though: Try hand walking your horse for about 3-5 minutes and have someone watch him, does the stiffness get better or worse. If it gets worse, stop immediately and put him back in his stall/ paddock. If he seems to improve or stay the same, try hand-trotting him or lunge him at the trot in a ring or on dirt/ grass. If he works out of the stiffness, great, I'd say that he's on the mend and may just be stiff from lack of exercise/ use of the joint. If he gets worse with exercise, then the injury is still there and I'd recommend having the vet coming out and x-raying or ultrasounding, etc.
