So I got this guy in as a rescue a couple weeks ago. Working on getting his weight back up. He has been to the vet and got a clean bill of health just needing some groceries. My question is do you guys think he’s Standardbred? I was told he was “gaited”?
He could be. I always recognize them by their movement. How does he go? If he’s a standard bred, aren’t they inclined to pace unless you do a lot of work to get him to trot or canter?
I have no clue, but he looks super sweet. Thank you for taking him in, poor fella. Hes going to look so much better when hes got his weight back, fills out and by then you should beable to tell what he is and can do.. Hugs to you!!!
If he trots and he can really cover a lot of ground with each stride, he could be a standardbred as they can trot naturally or pace. My first horse was a stardardbred trotter and he could go miles at the trot, never paced tho'.
One time I was riding a horse (not a standardbred) and I was out riding with a friend and she was riding her standardbred mare, we were trotting and I pushed my horse faster, the mare kept up easily. Just out of curiosity I wondered how fast she could trot so I moved to a canter, she trotted right beside me, so I upped it to a good gallop and she still trotted effortlessly beside me.
And he was 16 at the time!
I was was way out of my comfort zone at the speed!
