Is there hope for old pitted stirrups?

I bought a pair of used stirrup leathers, and the seller threw in a pair of schooling-quality stirrups. They are pretty beat up and so scruffy that I'm worried they might scratch the saddle (when put up for longe-line work, etc.). Is there anything that can be done? Some sandpaper? A cleaner of some sort? I realize stirrups aren't terribly expensive and I could just replace them, but for around the barn maybe they are worth saving.

If they're nickel (sometimes stamped Solid Nickel or Never Rust) just bin them. I've seen a few old ones fail unexpectedly.

If they're steel or stainless steel, as CC said :)

Just trash 'em and buy new. The time and effort you'll spend trying to make them usable again isn't worth it.

Regular hard irons are cheap enough, and I'm betting you can find some after - Christmas sales.
