So I have my awesome horse, Jay, and he likes jumping. He is almost 14 y/o (in February). I was wondering what other people thought about jumping 3' this year and the next for 4-H, and after that doing just 2'6"? Or maybe 2'6" this year and the next, and 3' afterwards? I'm mainly concerned about Jay's health leg-wise. What do you all think would be too hard on him? I just need opinions! Thanks!

Need more info. Has your horse jumped a lot in the past? What height is he comfortable with? If he's been jumping 2'6" like they are logs on the ground, then try just moving up to 2'9", let him get used to that height and then up to 3'. If you're jumping anything other than very low cross rails and verticals, I personally would restrict jumping to 2 times a week at most. Your surface comes into play too. If you are jump in a hard concussive ring, you would have more leg wear and tear than on a softer grass surface. Just use common sense and listen to your horse regarding the height. He will tell you quickly enough if the new height is too much for him or easy.

My mare is 13, and in awesome shape. Right now we're jumping 2'6" and lower consistently, we jumped 3' today and she totally was cool with it. Just effortless.

Slowly work your way up to it from whatever height you're at now. If at any point he gets sketched out, go back down a hole and work over that for a little while. He has to build.muscle!

If I had tried to jump 3' last year it would have been a disaster.

My horse did 4ft plus well into his late teens and early 20's. It all depends on the horse. I only rode him lightly 4 days a week. I maybe jumped him once a week max. It was usually every other week. He had ample turnout and I was constantly in tune with his overall health.

I agree with what others have said, a young out of shape horse may have trouble wtih fences that an older horse can do with ease. It all depends on the fitness level and comfort level of the horse. I would stick to jumping once a week and lots of flatwork between. If your horse isn't in great shape bring the jumps up slowly, throwing an out of shape horse at big jumps out of the blue can do lots of damage both soundness wise and training wise. Take it slow and he will let you know where he is comfortable.

I just saw this post...

I would like to add that as I was told by a very wise person...

"Your horse has only so many jumps, slide-stops, cutting and barrel racing or other riding discipline activity to accomplish successfully on their bodies.
Make the most of those times and don't overdue... "

Take real good care of their bodies and they will take care of you...but do listen and watch carefully for the signs telling you enough when ever that shall come and be.
Ride and condition and remember to let them rest and recuperate as any athlete needs doing after a competition or hard training.

Sorry. I forgot to get back! He has been jumping since he was about 4 or 5 (my guess) and we are jumping about 2'6" quite a bit when we jump right now, but mostly lower verticals other than that (if that makes any sense!). It seems the higher we go, the more he loves it. We have jumped 3' a little, and he hops right over it effortlessly. I jump once or twice a week, and other than that, only groundwork. Our riding area is a flat grassy area. I think what I've decided, as he is rather accident prone (the only times he injures himself is outside the arena), is that as long as he stays healthy I'll go as high as we are both comfortable with (he would jump higher if I asked). If Jay starts to get a little worn, we'll stick to lower stuff. I'm trying to put his health first and foremost!
