Whenever my horse does something I don't approve of and I reprimand him, he licks his lips and chews. Why?

Horses like strong leaders, and the lead horse will put a horse back into their place. Contrary to many horse owner beliefs, horses like black and white discipline and herd hierarchy. Reprimanding him is exactly what a good lead horse would do, so he's content, thus the licking and chewing. Hope I made sense!

licking and chewing is a sign that a horse has experienced some stress but is now releasing it. they hold stress in their jaws, and when the stress is experienced, then they find themselves no longer under that stress, they move the jaw and tongue to release the accumulated stress. it's the horsey equivalent of "Whew!"
