All of my horses love to lick us. My 20 y.o. Clyde X does this the most, and always has. After a treat, the horses will often lick our hands to get any last bits of crumbs (if we let them), but Sam licks everything, treat or no treat. He will lick my coat, my jeans, my hat, my gloves... He tries to lick the farrier's back when he's getting his feet done. The others lick too, but not to the same extent. They also never offer to nip or bite, but just like to lick in a lazy and relaxed manner. Our horses are all well fed with quality hay, concentrates and mineral supplements. Anyone else have "lickers"? Why do they do this?

I worked with a Tennessee Walkin' licker named Frodo. Honestly I think he wanted the salt from my hands or he was trying to butter me up ;) But he was quite friendly with his tongue. Maybe there's a deficiency somewhere that needs to be addressed? Not all horses are created equal, even with having access to the same things.

I just thought it was because they like salt. Certain horses do it, others don't. And I don't care lol, it brings me to believe Cowboy is more of a dog ;-)

Both of my horses do it too! My one horse loves to lick my jackets and there are some jackets that she will lick more than others. I have no idea why she does this but she will do it to anyone and especially my very non-horsey brothers(who think she I trying to attack them and have no idea what's going on haha)

My Appy gelding is a bit of a licker.....he likes to lick my hands and sometimes my face, but it's not a constant thing - usually just a few licks and he's done.

My Perch doesn't really lick.
