I had a pretty bad weekend.

My horse is dead lame and my colt is turning mucho studly. I was at my whits end this weekend dealing with horse issues.

My yearling colt despiratly needs to be gelded, but hes yet to drop. Its looking like he needs surgery, so he can move back in with my mare. I cant wait forever, its an inconvenience to everyone right now. I have no idea what to expect. Any one go through crypt surgery it with their colt?

My mare just went into heat, early for her this year, probably because of my colt being around. So I want to make sure shes not pregnant. How soon can I get her tested?

My vet is calling me when shes in the office tomorrow. But I am sort if impatient :p

if your worried about you colt getting your mare pregnant. Don't. If he hasn't even dropped yet he won't be able to get her bred. I have a 3 year old stud and he has been practicing on the mares outside and hasn't got one pregnant yet, and he has been dropped for a while. They usually can't successfully breed until their about 4. So just be patient and then when he drops get him fixed right away if he isn't going to be a good breeding stud.

I didnt say my mare is his mother, she is not.

Cowgirl, sorry but I am not going to risk it. Its sort of irresponsible to just keep them together and hope they dont breed. They certainly can breed at any age but its a low probablity. The more times you expose a colt to a mare, the more your probability goes up. You cant generalize and say horses cant breed till 4, that may get you into a little bit of trouble in.

I dont really have the choice to wait too long. A friend is letting me keep him at her house, with a pony for the time being. I am not going to push my luck keeping him there and just wait it out. Besides the fact the longer I wait the more chance I have of him staying studly.
