Honestly, I wasn't sure where the best place to post this would be, so I figured general would be a good option.

I'm sure this post has been made a thousand times over, but I am a young adult looking into buying my first horse. I have been riding for about 5 years now. Unfortunately, I have run into a limited number of options as far as lesson horses for me to ride. It's nobody's fault, of course, but I do not have any horses to really move up on. Last year, after spending months re-training a particular paint horse, I finally moved up to the 3-foot jumps. Unfortunately, that horse got sold and I was put back on a horse who had issues with even ground poles. After spending nearly the whole year working with her, she was taken from me and given to other lesson students. It was a defeating feeling to put so much effort into those horses, only to be left now with an older appaloosa that I feel a bit guilty riding. He's on the smaller side and is developing joint issues, so we can't do too much in the way of jumping. This rambling may seem out of nowhere, but all of this is why I feel it's time for me to buy my own project horse to train up and move up on.

With all of that being said, I am now looking to make a one-year plan to save up and purchase a horse. I am also trying to do research into costs and other various horse-ownership related things. I am planning to do my own outside research, of course, and I have been asking a good friend of mine who owns his own private barn plenty of questions. I also plan to sit down with my trainer and have a conversation about budgeting and the like. But, I would like to get multiple opinions so I can cross-examine different people's experiences and advice. I don't want to take from just one source. (I own several reptiles and I've learned to do plenty of research from various sources, lol.)

So, with all of that, I wanted to put this post out looking for different opinions/advice/tips/etc. about buying a first time horse. Whether it's about pre-purchase exams, actually looking at the horse, costs that most people don't think about until they get the horse, etc. Anything anyone can contribute would be very helpful!

** I do want to add that as far as tack costs associated with a horse, I actually own a fair amount of tack. The only big things I'm missing are a bridle and possibly a girth. I have a 50inch girth, but who knows if that will fit whatever horse I decide to purchase. With that being said, I own show clothing, saddle, saddle pads, grooming supplies, halters, lead ropes, reins, polo wraps, etc., etc.

Thank you in advance!
