hes so purdy. you should probably put the stirrup irons up so they stop slapping him. and normally you'd twist the reins and put the throat latch trough so they dont flop around .

BarnPrincess...my trainer wants the stirrups down so he gets used to them flapping on his sides.

The OP positions her reins and stirrups exactly the way I do. I found that if you have your horse properly sensitized the stirrups don't bother them.

I also prefer the reins where the OP has them for they are more secure and unlikely to come loose. Where you mentioned putting them I found that even the weight of the reins under the throatlatch influences the head position.
